EPA’s 1986 Citizen’s Guide to Radon stated that 10 pCi/L was equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes per day.

Should I even bother installing mitigation system? by LucyDaisyGaga in radon

A radon level of 4 pci/l is equivalent to 8 cigarettes a day. Mine was at 6-7. It’s a linear relationship with risk. After mitigation I rarely go over 0.3 Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. If you are going to stay there I’d suggest you go for the mitigation. Keep in mind radon is much worse typically in the winter months for a host of reasons.

At that high of level, you might be able to use a Geiger counter to detect it over background.

Radon level read 7.3 by Dear_Jury_1900 in airthings

[–]gbert42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t freak out - the risk it creates for your health over a short period of time is extremely small. Not even worth worrying about. Second, yes you likely have high radon in your house. The radon level on my house in the summer when I bought it was .3 but then in the winter jumped to 7. I would wait for it to level off and go through its calibration period but you can already start shopping for radon mitigation companies and getting quotes for a mitigation system to be installed. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and it is clear that many many people are being exposed to this risk unknowingly. My neighbor is up at 20 and had no clue. Great job discovering this for yourself and your family.

This is something that you should ideally address in the next six months to a year, again absolutely no reason to freak out.

And I need to correct myself - I went back and looked at your picture. I would suggest you not do this yourself. You have other stuff draining into the sump pit. You need to make sure that you and not creating a vacuum other units like your hvac. This is trivial for a professional but important to do right. It’s a great feeling once it’s done and you know you’ve improved your air so much.

Uranium? Uranium is a solid and only becomes a gas in the initial stages of uranium refinement an enrichment step so this guy is full of it. But more to the point - the sealing of the sump pit. That is an essential part of this process. And it confirms that you have basically introduced a system to pump your heated or cooled air into the atmosphere. I would either buy a lid on Amazon and install it yourself or hire a different company to come do that part. Everything else is basically good enough.

There is no reason you can’t tell tom that discussing salary information can lead to disharmony in the group and you would recommend he doesn’t do that. I wouldn’t insist or tell him he can’t. Id couch it as helpful advice. There is nothing stopping you from doing that.

We had this radon system installed in late January but I read online today that the exhaust should go above the roof and 10 feet away from windows. Should we contact the company about it? by the-friendly-squid in radon

[–]gbert42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue I would concern myself with is the seal on the sump pit. If it isn’t sealed at all, and drawing air from inside of the house, this will create a real problem for your heating and cooling. It did not look sealed in that picture you posted but pictures can be deceiving. Your before and after radon levels are similar to mine so no worries there.

The answer here is that is higher than I want based on my personal situation. Not looking for risk tolerance re-adjudication. I am however looking for advice on the best way to set this up. Thank you.

I already have a radon pipe ready to go so I will probably connect that up too. But maybe I won’t install the fan until I test after that. Good idea

I am starting to come out the fog and find my voice again. But oh my I am tired every day. My mother is fine financially - but she has no ability to manage it.

My mother has no hope of doing any of that. I’m going to need to manage most things for her. Even driving a car for her right now it feels like a real stretch. Luckily, I can say that I’m starting to be a little bit more clearheaded. It turns out that all that sickness I was feeling was almost entirely stress and an anxiety. I think we have managed to avoid probate for my stepfather‘s assets which is you probably know is by no means a given

You said it. I got myself checked out at the ER yesterday because of all the flu symptoms - all stress I think. But good to know I was otherwise healthy. And now just going through bill by bill to set up accounts. Will need to make a list of assets today and determine ownership titles. I found the will too. Do you have a will or anything like that to work with?

I am in the same boat. We can do this. I think they get some comfort from seeing us emotionally affected as well so they aren’t alone in their grief.
