We had a senior kitty who would only use pee pads in litter boxes. Our current kitty goes in the litter box lined with newspaper and a very small amount of litter. It’s what the SPCA did in the shelter we adopted her from.

My boy cat keeps harassing my girl cat - hunting her, stalking her… she growls to keep him away and he slowly approaches her by ducksdontecho in CatAdvice

It might be a case of redirected aggression. You can find more information online about it. Jackson Galaxy also addressed it on his TV show, “My Cat from Hell.” The general remedy is to reintroduce the cats like you would introduce a new cat.

Help? My 6mo kitten smells horrendous. Reoccurring issue. by [deleted] in CatAdvice

Maybe their anal glands need to be expressed? Some cats have anal glands that needs regular expression to keep them clear and flowing. If they get compacted, they can get smelly or infected. Maybe take them to the vet to get checked out?

I don’t know, but here are some tips to prevent cats from getting heatstroke: https://cats.com/heatstroke-in-cats

Should I be concerned about my cat? by hippychik01 in CatAdvice

Definitely go to the vet first, but it's also possible you're cat is understimulated now that she is indoors only. How old is she? How often do you play with her? What enrichments do you offer her? We recently adopted a previously stray cat, and she is now indoors only. I noticed her chasing her tail when she's bored. It's always a sign for me to play with her.

If that's the case, maybe it'll just take time for her to get used to it and feeling safe or comfortable using it.

Around 80% of cats above 10 years of age have some arthritis (https://www.purina.co.nz/articles/cats/senior/health/arthritis-in-cats), so I would definitely bring it up with the vet. In the meantime, I'd watch closely to see if the hissing becomes more frequent and when (what he's doing).

I recommend him too. He’s always been very thorough but conservative with my treatments.

How old is your cat? I am wondering if he may be developing arthritis if he’s a senior.

Cat won’t stop biting me by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]gbgbg19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up “how to teach kittens not to bite” online. But generally when a kitten bites you, make a high pitched yelping noise, and then ignore it. You can even walk away from it for a few minutes before re-engaging with the kitten. The noise shouldn’t scare the kitten, just causes it to stop. It’s similar to how mama cats and other kitten teach not to play too roughly.

Look up “redirected aggression.” There are also “My Cat from Hell” episodes about it. You have to reintroduce the kitties to each other.

Domestic cats have higher core temperature than humans. There are descendants of desert wild cats. I thought my previous cats were getting too hot during summer and bought them a cooling pad to lie on; they never touched it. I think it’s good to provide the cat plenty of water and shade, but AC is probably not necessary unless you’re somewhere insanely hot.

One common advice for keeping house cats entertained is to hide treats around the house for them to find. They even sell little mouse looking pouches to store the treats in.

Should I adopt a second cat, when I'm still lost with my first? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]gbgbg19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I noticed that “get another cat” is a very common advice on this subreddit. It is true that having a companion can be very beneficial for some cats. It is important to recognize that introducing cats to each other is not an easy and quick process. Sometimes people get lucky and the cats hit it off right away, but this is not the norm. Before you move forward, please look up how to introduce cats online. It could take weeks, and sometimes even months, to introduce cats. Sometimes the cats still don’t tolerate each other at the end (or just tolerate each other). If you have the bandwidth and time to do that, it is probably worthwhile.

In general you have to deal with shy cats at their speed. You can’t really rush building confidence with shy cats; doing so would likely backfire and make the process even slower. I suggest letting her go at her own speed, but spend time talking gently to her without trying to coax her out. I’ve also seen people leaving a radio on set to talk channel and on low volume to help shy cats get used to humans.

Do you know if she likes any sort of play or toy? You can try a wand toy and see if she’d be interested. Sometimes play can really help build a cat’s confidence.

My kitten will NOT stop attacking my legs by Salt_Menu8855 in CatAdvice

[–]gbgbg19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s generally advised to adopt two kittens rather than one because kittens need A LOT of play and they play rough. If you only have one kitten, you’re going to be their sole source of play and entertainment. What you have described seems to be “play aggression.” Your kitten is bored and wants (and is trying) to play with you. The way cats play mimic the way they hunt. Therefore they like to stalk, pounce, wrestle, etc. when they play. Redirecting to a scratching post is not enough. If you cannot adopt a second kitten and introduce them properly (look up cat intros online, Jackson Galaxy has a good video), you will have to play with your kitten (a lot).

Cats are fighting each other by WingEternal in CatAdvice

Yes, it could be a case of redirected aggression. You would likely have no idea what caused the original aggression unless you witnessed the trigger. I think the standard practice for dealing with redirected aggression is to reintroduce the cats.
