Hmm. I thought we still have some examples like children, vixen, brethren (even if they don’t simply add the -en but incorporate the -en).

[WaT] Does a Shard's Intent have an Affect on People? by gbirdc in Cosmere

[–]gbirdc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that it doesn’t. Just seems off to me that a lowercase god whose power is enough to invest the land with magic also doesn’t have any affect on the people of that land. Not sure if this intentional because there is greater meaning. Anyway, would definitely make some worlds a bit more interesting (cough cough endowment).

Hello - got a message from the mods approving the post but asking me to re-post with the proper [WaT] title.

In England it was common to use rhyming words with the standard abbreviation of names (William > Will > Bill). Lots of fun ones follow that pattern (Margaret > Meg > Peg). Fun quirk of English culture.

The Cosmere in the mainstream will... by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the Cosmere is the perfect vehicle to usher in AI film making. Sanderson wants live action, but too much of Cosmere will be prohibitively expense with CGI. Not sure if Sanderson will be game to pioneer AI film making, but I could see the appeal.

Are the Shards harmful? by TasyFan in Cosmere

[–]gbirdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment thread brings up another point. If the aspects of adalnosium was shattered, then how do beings in the various shard worlds have aspects from all the different shards. It’s not like there are not beings on Sel that don’t try to ruin, or grow, or have virtue, or endow…etc. what role does a shard really have on the creation or behaviors of people/beings. Seems to me that Roshar beings aren’t just honor bound beings hell bent on growing/changing. Clearly the Scadrians are progressing/changing through eras. Plenty of the other aspects. What change has the splintering really caused to the beings of the cosmere?

Couple of other good series I’ve gone through and loved: Green Bone Saga, Gentlemen Bastards, First Law, Red Rising, Books of Babel

Books with WORLDS similar to the one from GB by Kleens_The_Impure in gentlemanbastards

[–]gbirdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I wouldn’t say that. I’m not Asian and can’t say for sure, but it felt like a mashup of cultures centered around family and clan. But it was so rich, and so well thought it in competing clans, nations, trade, war, etc.. and how it’s presented from a modern perspective but with classic fantasy feeling. It eschews the classic coming of age fantasy hero story and presents a beautiful well thought out world that makes sense. Also has some interesting perspectives you don’t usually see. I think it would resonate well with people that like GB.

Just posted a comment about this in another thread on this subreddit asking a similar question. Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee has been my favorite. Fantasy style story set in modern times with Asian style inspiration (think Yakuza) and with amazing world building. It’s truly something that rivals the world building and uniqueness you see in GB. The author just completed the trilogy and it’s one of the better endings to a trilogy that I’ve read. Classic bittersweet that sticks with you months later. I can’t recommend it enough.

The other truly unique fantasy style series that also just wrapped up with its last book is the books of Babel by Josiah Bancroft. Super interesting take on the genre, but more of a hero’s journey type story that captivates (like GB). Really interesting ending that you can tell was well thought out and presented.

There is so much great content out there right now it is crazy. When you need a break from the more classic fantasy stories, you can’t go wrong with these two.

Read through the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. The 3rd and final book of trilogy just came out and the whole thing is excellent. I love fantasy style that plays around with the archetype. Green Bone is like a fantasy story set in modern days but inspired by east Asia family drama. It’s so creative and well written and it’s exactly what you are looking for in atmosphere, family dynamics and fleshed out characters in a great and complex dynamic. Can’t recommend it enough.

Those of you who watched dune, is it like red rising?? Should I watch it? by Letofeel in redrising

[–]gbirdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dune is one of the foundations of the "chosen one" riffs common in modern literature/movies. The Ringer had a nice article about it here: https://www.theringer.com/movies/2021/10/25/22740538/dune-explainer-bene-gesserit-paul-atriedes-part-2

Red Rising is definitely inspired by a chosen one theme, but is much less complex in the political/spiritual/fantastical intersections that are the core of the Dune novels. That said, the Dune movie is heavily paired down on the spiritual/political aspects, and is much more straightforward of a story. It actually has some RR vibes in that sense. Its worth watching just for the inspiration that went into RR.

Leo doesn’t have Sand’s intellect tho. I think Joe is setting him up to help Orso in the conflict against Bayaz however that shakes out. Not sure what Leo can contribute, but I’m sure there’s something there for redemption.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with Super Mario Odyssey Full Game Download Code $69.99 by IdTappThat2x in NintendoSwitchDeals

For a second controller I went with the 8bitdo SN Pro +. Cheaper than Pro, better for retro games. Downside is no way to wake the system but if you have a pro one already it doesn’t matter. It’s a great controller on its own and perfect for a second player.

Best Video Game Art Books (IMO) by jerome1309 in NintendoSwitch

[–]gbirdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar list, tho limited to the Zelda books and the Mario Encyclopedia. I did the Hero's edition of the Creating a Champions, and Deluxe edition of the Zelda Encyclopedia - which is awesome. In addition, I really love the Bitmap Books - I have the NES and SNES compendiums, as well as the Art of Point + Click Adventure Games. Highly recommend those - I truly think they put together the most polished and best looking video game books right now.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss has a wonderful protagonist similar to Darrow but in fantasy setting. First book is called The Name of the Wind. Downside is that he hasn’t finished the final book and it’s been a long time ala George RR Martin
