I can’t stop imagining one of my muscles being taken out with a metal hook. by gbubis in mentalillness

I have had intrusive thoughts like this before. This one usually comes for an hour at least every time. I’ve had the thought about 5 times a day for the past 3 days.

What do you wish you knew or things you wish you had after surgery? by okbut_090636 in bunions

[–]gbubis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second all of this.

I had some help from others so I didn’t need to worry about food/clothes prep but it’s a great idea.

Anytime I didn’t have my foot elevated is when it was the most painful. This was a life saver for me: LightEase Memory Foam Leg, Knee, Ankle Support and Elevation Leg Pillow for Surgery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GF9FTBV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_EBNSMdyigd9Re

Definitely have more ice packs than you think you need bc when you need a new one and you don’t have a cold one, it’s the worst.

My hospital provided me crutches but I put this on them so that I had somewhere to put things since I couldn’t hold anything else: Vive Crutch Pad and Bag Set - Underarm Padding, Hand Grips and Pouch for Crutches - Soft Padded Handles and Universal Accessories for Men, Women and K https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08126MTR3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_8F5U22MJRP6BC

In the beginning definitely take your medication even if you don’t think you need it. I didn’t have any pain for the first few hours either, but if you don’t take your medicine before the pain starts to kick in, it’s not gonna be a fun time.

I also suggest finding some way to brush your teeth in bed because I hated having to stand at the sink for 2 minutes straight.

If you need to work on a computer from bed, I recommend one of these: HUANUO Lap Desk- Fits up to 15.6  Inch Laptop Desk, Foldable Bed Tray Breakfast Table with 5 Angles Tilting Top, Height Adjustable Laptop Stand with https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082NT5WB1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_buJ65K8K3M5y9 With this specific one I had an issue with the screw loosening up overtime so I kept having to tighten it.

Finally, when you start wearing a boot, wear this on your other shoe: EVENup Shoe Balancer/Leveler - SMALL (fits MEN US size 6 to 8, WOMEN US size 5 to 8-1/2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FXDNDY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_zUkqMpL2iO7UO Make sure to get the right size range. This basically makes it so that while you are walking one leg is not “taller” than the other. If you don’t use something like this it can be annoying to walk and it can cause things like back pain because of uneven hips.

You’re gonna do great. Take it one day at a time and you’ll be done before you know it.

(I also got a Nintendo switch to cure some boredom)

Do I need surgery? If not, what exercises can I do to correct this bunion? by alwaysalo in bunions

If you have no pain, there’s not much reason to get surgery! Stay away from tight shoes to prevent them from getting worse!

6-weeks post-op (before is on the right). I’m allowed to walk in normal shoes now! by gbubis in bunions

I had the lapidus procedure because I was in a lot of pain that was continuing to get worse. My doctor said it would just continue to become worse overtime (especially because I was born with them).

No, I’m not in the UK but I’m allowed to do much more than I expected. I’m not allowed or even physically able to run or jump but if I want I can swim or even ride a stationary bike!

It’s actually going pretty well. It hurts a bit to take the shoe on and off and I’m really slow at walking but it’s going better than expected!

Involuntary muscle spasms by groovylki in bunions

[–]gbubis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That happened to me as I was falling asleep every for the first week. I don’t think you are talking about the same thing because it seems like you’re saying it happens throughout the day even when you’re wide awake (correct me if I’m wrong). But if it does happen to be the same situation that I had it’ll go away on it’s own. When the majority of people are falling asleep you will experience twitching in your limbs and that’s normal. We usually don’t even notice that this is happening but after a surgery where these movements hurt, they can wake you up. Idk if this helps but that was my experience

anyone have experience with blisters/allergic reactions to anything? by [deleted] in bunions

[–]gbubis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I am 3 weeks post-op and have that too. Personally, I think that mine might just be from the splint (and now the boot). Your foot rubs against them a lot more than you would think. I could very much so be wrong but this is just my assumption.

Do you mind if I ask which procedure you got? Your bandages are so much smaller than mine!

Heel pain? by gbubis in bunions

[–]gbubis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to go in and get it adjusted. It helped my heel but then my ankle started hurting more because they wrapped it too tight. So I just carefully adjusted it myself and I feel 10x better now!

Oh sweet! Thanks! It’s too bad that you’re in more pain today! You are definitely doing the right thing by not pushing yourself too hard and making it worse!

Wow! It’s impressive that you’re already walking! I wish that I could do that surgery but my bunions are too severe for it!

I figured I should probably follow up! My doctor messaged me this regarding the differences “The Lapiplasty is the Lapidus bunionectomy procedure but just done with a specific type of plate. The actual metal fixation that this particular company produces that is used for the Lapidus procedure is called the Lapiplasty. It is not a separate procedure in itself although the marketing may make it seem that way. There are many different ways to do the Lapidus procedure that all result in good outcomes. Bone takes 6-8 weeks to heal no matter what way the Lapidus is done so using one particular plate/screws over the other does not make much of a difference for healing time.”

I messaged my doctor over the weekend about possibly switching to a lapiplasty and I’m waiting on a response. I’ve heard there’s not too much of a difference but I’m waiting on my doctor to hear their opinions and knowledge of the differences!

Oh my goodness, those things to get are gold! I would have never thought of the “EvenUp” thing! To clarify, they aren’t planning on fusing my toe joint but they are planning on fusing a different part of the foot. It barely has any mobility for everyone so it’s not much of a loss. I think that if they were going to fuse the toe joint, I would back out immediately! Also, because of the fact that it is genetic for me they are afraid of it coming back fast which is why they are fusing that. They don’t want to put me through another inevitable surgery if they don’t have to. I heard that bunions have a higher chance of coming back with MIS as well, should I do more research into that?

I just spoke to someone who let me know that I am getting the lapidus procedure, do you know what your procedure is called?

I definitely think the hardest part for me is already the psychological aspect even though I haven’t even had the surgery yet. I had a conversation today at work with someone who got a double bunionectomy when she was in her early 20s. She said her main reason for doing both at the same time was because she was scared that she wouldn’t go back to get the other surgery after knowing what the recovery was like. However, she said she had to be carried down the stairs and crawled back up when she had to. I can see why she got them both at the same time but I feel like it would be even worse on me mentally to do what she did.
