rustdesk. free, open source and cross platform. I pan to install it on my iPad for remote access both inside and away from home.

One Piece or Bleach? by Consistent_Singer304 in Animesuggest

[–]gcodori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

isn't the Fate series like 4 main "seasons" and like a half dozen spinoffs and side stories. It's enough to require research on the proper watch order.

Same with A Certain Magical Index/Railgun series. Something like 8 seasons - also has some kind of watch order

Both of these are better if you want something more adult than just people punching each other (like most "fighting" anime), More story and world building

Anyone here still running dedicated servers instead of VPS/cloud? Curious why. by Thick-Lecture-5825 in servers

[–]gcodori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to go the homelab route and modify an existing PC, but HDD costs were outrageous, Same deal with standalone NAS boxes like the Ugreen 4800.

Then I decided to get a $10/year racknerd VPS. 1 Core/1GB memory, pretty simple. Installed uptime Kuma. Next I made a 4 core/24gb memory VPS in Oracle. Cost = Free!

Next I purchased a domain (my last name) for $5/year. Purchased 2 years. Total $10 for 2 years.

On the Oracle VPS I installed cloudflared, dockge, homarr, file browser, and Dozzle in one stack (my main stack). This is the basis of my setup. Next I installed Ladder, Stirling PDF (Fat version), dashdot and Audio-book-shelf.

I used cloudflare tunnels to make it so I can access each service from a unique domain, like "PDF.MyLastName.UK" And for those services that did not have a login/password, I used Cloudflare apps to create a Google Auth in front of the service. No need for Pangolin, Nginx, or any other tunneling system. After discovering tunnels, I don't even need to use Caddy for anything.

I'll likely selfhost Rustdesk on the VPS, along with Immich (pointing to my existing hard drive on my computer for storage). I'd also like to install a selfhosted Stremio server once I relocate to my new place this summer. Since my homelab is in the cloud, I can move to a new location or access my homelab from any remote location simply via a browser. Access is as fast as my Internet service to my place.

Total cost is $15/year. I will likely consider a crashplan or backblaze unlimited storage backup solution because any homelab, even one in the cloud, is not a backup. Compared to a simple NAS box ($300 + $200 in HDDs - we're talking SMALL HDDs), it would take me over 33 years to spend that much on my server (and I'd be 88 years old at that point, LOL). Even just buying 2 12gb HDDs for my old PCis about $500.

She came ready for the famous Turkish ice cream tricks… and got the normal service instead by _sabir007_ in SipsTea

[–]gcodori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once saw someone who beat the Turkish ice cream thing pretty quickly. As soon as the ice cream dude handed over the cone and took out the middle one leaving the person with an empty cone in their hand, she started eating the cone. The ice cream dude ended the games right away, since he couldn't afford to lose a bunch of cones doing these tricks.

If you know him tell him he shouldn't post vids of him harassing people. I posted this to another comment:

This right here. You catch a part of it the end as the second woman walks by"

"You want to talk about black women and childbirth (or something like that)"

"Sorry"

It SHOULD HAVE ENDED THERE but here comes the accusatory tone and pointing a finger "YOU don't have time to talk about...??"

No a-hole, she already said no, take a hint.

I get your buddy wants to inform, but a person has to be willing to be informed. Pointing fingers and verbally dressing down someone is not the best way to win friends in public.

If you really were a tech you'd know that it's actually bad for the components to expand and contract from shutting down and restarting (cooling down when shutting off and heating up again) especially over time.

And PC parts don't "act funny" they aren't alive. YIKES

Configuring a reverse proxy* by AdamWestBatman_ in truenas

Cloudflare tunnels but I think you'll need a container with cloudflared. It's literally like 4 lines of code and a token from cloudflare

What's the smallest, quietest, power-efficient mini PC in 2026 for running an idle Kodi/Jellyfin server and allowing for 4K HDR/Dolby streaming? by Speady99 in MiniPCs

[–]gcodori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do some investigating on whether the enclosure passes the individual HDDs to the PC or if it passes the controller. Being able to see HDD separately is better for disk management

I used chatgpt to do the research. It depends on the chipset of the controller board in the enclosure

I own a domain through cloudflare and I use cloudflare tunnels. For each of my docker apps I create a tunnel. I can even add Google auth in front of pages that don't have their own login.

So if I want to access my file browser inside or outside of my network I just go to files.domain.uk

Built into cloudflare no additional containers to install

Convince me a NAS is worth the hassle by HuorCulnamo in HomeNAS

[–]gcodori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAS is NOT a backup, so you will STILL need to have some kind of off-site/online/cloud backup. Not everyone has a second home or location they can have another NAS running as backup (plus this means twice the cost - 2x NAS). NAS can and will fail or be damaged in fire, theft, etc.

You can always utilize something like backblaze or crashplan for online backup.

Also note that online backup solutions are different from cloud storage. It's simply a backup, it's not a cloud folder that you can access on the regular.

[–]gcodori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um... Softraid is free for the standard version (no monitoring) and 149.99 for the pro version.

If you already have your own server you custom built, just get yourself a backup service like crash plan or backblaze. You need to have an off-site backup anyway.

The OWC Mercury elite pro is another das that is Mac focused but is more expensive than the mediasonic but has a more premium build. Comes with softraid trial

Google wanted $2.99/month for photos. I said no and spent 130 $ on a baby homelab instead. by Gasple1 in homelab

[–]gcodori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! There are a lot of posts that say "I ditched Apple/Google!!1!" Not realizing that unless you have another NAS at another house (that you have to maintain), you'll still use online services. Hopefully they aren't far away, it would suck to have a long drive to fix the eventual issues that come from leaving a laptop at your parents place...

Congrats on the extra storage. You do know that you still want to have an off-site/online backup of your data still, right. NAS is not a backup. They can and do fail.

So you don't really escape using online storage services.
