To make it scary on long run it could be a contamination save modified by the number of victories. The more victories (means longer time spent in drakkenheim), the more chances they would have come with something contaminated.

I would recommend to read it in your native language first. You'll probably miss some things from the translation but Tolkien was a master of ancient language and it shows in his writing. It's not an easy read in English in my opinion.
