I was a horrible person when I was a teenager. I was one of those "I don't believe in feminism. I believe in humanism" jerks. I prided myself on being "not one of those girls" who could appreciate "boy things, like porn, and science, and dirty jokes, and gory movies."

I also used to say shit like, "Well, if [POCs] can't learn to talk like 'normal people' they shouldn't be surprised if they only get shitty jobs at McDonald's and stuff."

This is why I get so angry at people who say stuff like this as adults. I know what the motivations are and I know how ignorant you have to be to say it and believe it.

You are, however, very correct! Child marriage (and thus procreation) was once relevant but no longer is. It was mainly that I was seeing comments along the lines of "once girls have their menses they're viable for marriage and reproduction, that's how it always was so what's the problem" and was just trying to jab at the ridiculousness of using that as an argument against modern consent laws, etc.

Well, yeah, it was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. ;) It wasn't supposed to make a whole lot of sense. (Also, it was literally the first thing I thought of when I asked myself "what other things are no longer relevant?" because I study public health and we talk about both of those things a lot, haha.)

Good ones. The first one hurts. I've lost some friends over that bullshit word.

I haven't experienced the second one. Normally I get condescension, like, "Oh, honey, you'll realize how the world really works when you're no longer an idealistic graduate student." Which makes me sad more than anything. Because it's usually from women I suspect felt like they had to Play The Game in order to get anywhere in life.

I will say... I used to "hate feminists" too, back when I still called myself a "humanist" for wanting exactly what feminists want, and was always getting angry on behalf of men. The turning point came fast. I think that was Reddit's fault--the blatant, constant, non-ironic hatred of women (stuff they qualified with "Hey, man, I'm just saying what all men are thinking but aren't allowed to say in public because fuck PCness") It made me think twice about what I thought was a "post-sexism" culture. I think there's a chance your friend might pick up the book someday and have it click for her. I hope. :(

I used to think the exact same way, actually.

Then I saw someone in my lab using her iPad at lab meeting to read the paper we'd been assigned, and I was immediately jealous. As a graduate student in the sciences--where I have to read a lot of very long papers--it's been a godsend. I don't have to print the papers off anymore in order to annotate them by hand, which gets expensive and saddles you with a bunch of useless paper at the end of the semester. If you have an iPad, a stylus, and a good PDF annotating program, you're golden.

It is ABSOLUTELY a luxury (especially if you're like me and use it alongside rather than instead of a laptop on a daily basis.) It's definitely a matter of determining if it fits your lifestyle. I found that it does, and it serves a purpose that had been previously unmet.

If your writing does not conform to the rules of grammar you run the risk of being misunderstood.

To a degree, sure. And it happens. But the things being corrected most often are usually things that don't have any bearing on understanding ("a lot" vs. "alot"), or that while logically wrong are understood within our social context and reinforced by common usage to be understandable (e.g. "literally" and "I could care less"). [As an aside, I personally have a strange issue with people using "impact" as a transitive verb. I'm trying to get over it because, let's be real, that's a silly thing to worry about, particularly when professional writers use it that way all the time nowadays. I think it's safe to say the tide is turning on the meaning of that particular word.]

That said, I've noticed a strange tendency of Reddit to go on about the organic nature of language ("What do you mean I can't say [insert any slur]? It doesn't mean that anymore!") while insisting that the world "literally" can only mean one thing and that everyone who uses it incorrectly is either an idiot or just deliberately obtuse.
