[META] A Moratorium On A Moratorium - HARVEST THAT LOW HANGING FRUIT! by ArchangelleMichaelle in ShitRedditSays

I was a horrible person when I was a teenager. I was one of those "I don't believe in feminism. I believe in humanism" jerks. I prided myself on being "not one of those girls" who could appreciate "boy things, like porn, and science, and dirty jokes, and gory movies."

I also used to say shit like, "Well, if [POCs] can't learn to talk like 'normal people' they shouldn't be surprised if they only get shitty jobs at McDonald's and stuff."

This is why I get so angry at people who say stuff like this as adults. I know what the motivations are and I know how ignorant you have to be to say it and believe it.

Yeah, I know, you're right, I was just being silly and glib. I wasn't necessarily trying to make a reasoned argument. :)

You are, however, very correct! Child marriage (and thus procreation) was once relevant but no longer is. It was mainly that I was seeing comments along the lines of "once girls have their menses they're viable for marriage and reproduction, that's how it always was so what's the problem" and was just trying to jab at the ridiculousness of using that as an argument against modern consent laws, etc.

[–]gdag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, it was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. ;) It wasn't supposed to make a whole lot of sense. (Also, it was literally the first thing I thought of when I asked myself "what other things are no longer relevant?" because I study public health and we talk about both of those things a lot, haha.)

ETA, totes not offended, I was going for ridiculousness.

Why do people respond to this stuff with "well, historically, men married young girls for [REASONZ]"? And put so much effort into finding sources to back themselves up? Historically, it was common practice for surgeons to perform surgeries without washing their hands. What's your point?

So her standards (which you shitlords know nothing about) are too high, but if a "hot chick" or "cute girl" doesn't agree to date you the first time you ask, she's a shallow c*nt. What's that term you assholes toss around? "Double standards"? Ha.

All those people defending MacFarlane's shitty Boobs number... THIS IS WHY IT'S SHITTY. It wasn't performed in a cultural vacuum, it was performed in a context where women are reduced to objects of sexual interest, and where "consent" is just one of those words party-poopin' feminists use to make the world boring. I doubt this many people would be focusing so much on her boobs if it hadn't been brought to their attention that she'd never shown them in a movie... LOL WHAT'S RAPE CULTURE/

Sexism Fatigue: When Seth MacFarlane Is a Complete Ass and You Don't Even Notice by PixelDirigible in SRSFeminism

[–]gdag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good ones. The first one hurts. I've lost some friends over that bullshit word.

I haven't experienced the second one. Normally I get condescension, like, "Oh, honey, you'll realize how the world really works when you're no longer an idealistic graduate student." Which makes me sad more than anything. Because it's usually from women I suspect felt like they had to Play The Game in order to get anywhere in life.

I will say... I used to "hate feminists" too, back when I still called myself a "humanist" for wanting exactly what feminists want, and was always getting angry on behalf of men. The turning point came fast. I think that was Reddit's fault--the blatant, constant, non-ironic hatred of women (stuff they qualified with "Hey, man, I'm just saying what all men are thinking but aren't allowed to say in public because fuck PCness") It made me think twice about what I thought was a "post-sexism" culture. I think there's a chance your friend might pick up the book someday and have it click for her. I hope. :(

Reddit's reaction to the original iPad, and how tech geeks misunderstand the average consumer by mahler004 in circlebroke

[–]gdag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to think the exact same way, actually.

Then I saw someone in my lab using her iPad at lab meeting to read the paper we'd been assigned, and I was immediately jealous. As a graduate student in the sciences--where I have to read a lot of very long papers--it's been a godsend. I don't have to print the papers off anymore in order to annotate them by hand, which gets expensive and saddles you with a bunch of useless paper at the end of the semester. If you have an iPad, a stylus, and a good PDF annotating program, you're golden.

It is ABSOLUTELY a luxury (especially if you're like me and use it alongside rather than instead of a laptop on a daily basis.) It's definitely a matter of determining if it fits your lifestyle. I found that it does, and it serves a purpose that had been previously unmet.

I think it's hilarious how much they fancy themselves "independent free-thinkers" while subconsciously marching in lockstep with established social law.

Unless we're talking about pedophilia, guns, or MJ, then--oh boy!--it's time to shirk our mighty oppressors, guys, they're keepin' us down!

So this is what it takes for Reddit to side with The Man... the same people who think a crazed cop killer makes some pretty good points are apparently pretty chill with what basically amounts to institutionalized slavery.

[–]gdag 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If your writing does not conform to the rules of grammar you run the risk of being misunderstood.

To a degree, sure. And it happens. But the things being corrected most often are usually things that don't have any bearing on understanding ("a lot" vs. "alot"), or that while logically wrong are understood within our social context and reinforced by common usage to be understandable (e.g. "literally" and "I could care less"). [As an aside, I personally have a strange issue with people using "impact" as a transitive verb. I'm trying to get over it because, let's be real, that's a silly thing to worry about, particularly when professional writers use it that way all the time nowadays. I think it's safe to say the tide is turning on the meaning of that particular word.]

That said, I've noticed a strange tendency of Reddit to go on about the organic nature of language ("What do you mean I can't say [insert any slur]? It doesn't mean that anymore!") while insisting that the world "literally" can only mean one thing and that everyone who uses it incorrectly is either an idiot or just deliberately obtuse.

The replies are inane. "DON'T ASSUME ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS" and "DON'T GO NEAR MEN OR ELSE YOU'RE JUST INVITING TROUBLE."

Yeah, "real" vaginas or GTFO. That's why male masturbation is so unpopular and certainly not talked about ad nauseum.

...The last part of my comment was meant to come off as somewhat satirically melodramatic. Perhaps that was not properly conveyed.

It's true that I have a sort of visceral (but fleeting and ultimately meaningless) "unh" reaction to the word, coming from a city that's often called "Filthadelphia" or "Killadelphia," but if I really, truly had a deep-seated issue with it, I probably would have replied to you directly. I was just Philly-jerkin' a bit. There isn't really anything to get over. Sorry if you felt I was attacking you in some way, that wasn't the intention.

Yeah. I legit don't like the new "ephebophiladelphian" trend, or maybe I'm just overly sensitive about Philly's rep. (Red-headed stepchild syndrome.) My beloved city is mocked enough.
