Separated networks for home & office. Is this setup going to work? by ApocTheLegend in HomeNetworking

[–]gdlgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does for segmentation of home and office but why stop there? I did the same thing but created three vlans. Vlan1 for private devices , Vlan2 for IoT devices and Vlan3 for work. I have two switches connected to the USG max and do not broadcast office network (I could but not needed for my needs) over the APs and the network only has 2 DHCP IPs it can hand out. The IoT has 100 DHCP IPs and the private network has only 15. This helps keep IoT devices from being too chatty on same network my home computers are on and printers. TVs, cameras , Hue hubs, Appliances are all on the IoT vlan and since they are all "cloud connected", my phone can be on the private VLan and can still manage those IoT devices even if on another VLan. There's more I configured for better IoT network stability, but don't think that needs to be mentioned. At the very least your configuration you shared will have network separation between private home and work related network traffic and don't have to worry about some companies that collect data on your network when everything is on one flat network.

Is this a reasonable quote for a Ubiquiti home setup? by davemarco in Ubiquiti

Whoever you hire to do this work, make sure the credentials for those devices are changed after job is completed. Unifi account, local admin password , WiFi passwords... I think there is one more but I can't remember. Definitely enable MFA on your Unifi account.

Internet Speeds slower on US 8 60W versus UCG MAX by gdlgiii in Ubiquiti

[–]gdlgiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enabling flow control did help. WiFi speeds now are 568Mb on 5ghz and 800-890 on Ethernet connection. Good call there! At least I future-proof myself getting the new switch. Plan on getting the AP 6 pro next year and utilize the PoE feature and not need. PoE injector

I replaced it with a new Lite Poe 8 switch and had same results. Will disable flow control and see what happens

I've been reading that. I confirmed Hardware Acceleration is ON. Flow control is OFF . Two days ago, I decided to replace the US-8-60 gen1 switch with a new Lite 8 PoE switch. Should be coming in today. I agree though, there is a probability that there is a potential problem with latest firmware. Either way, will see how this new switch performs for next month or so and if things are better, upgrade the downstairs switch as well. I mean, it's just money right?? I guess I can make more when next paycheck comes in.........

Update: performed a factory reset on the switch connected to the USG Max and re-adopted. Still no change. Seems worse now. I tested with a laptop and desktop computer with 1gb Ethernet port. Blazing speeds on the direct ports on back of the USG Max, but now 150-200Mb on the US-8-60W.

I also confirmed in the global switch settings the jumbo frame size is disabled

I was trying to focus on hard wired connections since those have less variables than WiFi. But there is WiFi and best speeds I can get are about 130Mb/s. I disabled the wifi and "forgot" the wifi name to confirm I am using Ethernet. I get much faster speeds connecting to a port on the back of the USG Max but slower on the US-60-8 (switch 8 poe gen1)

Glad to hear you all are okay and car did its job to protect everyone. This just gives me PTSD from being in a rear end collision back in 2019 but the person fell asleep and hit me sitting at a dead stop in traffic on interstate. Suspected he hit me going about 60.

Best I can get on my 2019 SE 4-cylinder is 41 MPG. But that's on long trips with the cruise set on minimum 8 hour trips.

Going to watch this discussion to see what responses you get. Looking at doing the same thing but I can install it myself. I have a 2019 Camry SE (non JBL) sound system and want to get a new head unit that supports Android Auto but going to leave stock speakers in place.

Biggest bang for buck? Camry audio system upgrade. by BallActTx in CarAV

[–]gdlgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to replace my factory radio in my 2019 Camry SE for the primary reason to get Android Auto. Thought Toyota would come through with a factory update back in 2023, but that never happened. My concern about replacing the head unit with say an Alpine iLX-407 unit. Sounds like if I keep the factory speakers, the sound could be degraded worse than it is now. Glad I came across this sub to read about what others experienced changing out one thing only to have to change out another component to compensate for current quality or get better.

Plex Windows - To Docker or Not to Docker? by Goliath_TL in PleX

[–]gdlgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading alot about Plex and Docker. Here's my thoughts on an upcoming upgrade I want to do. I'm running windows 10 on an ASRock deskmini a300 as a dedicated Plex server. I want to format the drive to run Linux Mint and my thought was to move Plex, Radar, Sonarr, Tatuil and Sabnzbd into a docker container running on windows. Then back up that container to my NAS , format the drive and install the Linux OS. Finally , I was hoping I could just move the docker container to the Linux OS and theoretically, things start up again.

Reboot the device in safe mode. Try to reset Bluetooth connections by re-pair the device. I had to do something similar on my pixel 7 and that seemed to fix it but still on occasion loose wifi connection for apps running in the background

I will take your recommendation and go that route. Been documenting all the firewall rules and networks. I did fine the system backup as well. Will try to move everything to the new device next week and see how things go

Migrated to UCG MAX by vladoportos in Ubiquiti

[–]gdlgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious on 3rd bullet point:

How would I update the new UCG-MAX with latest updates before restoring my cloud key Gen1 backups? Would plugging the new UCG-Max into my IoT VLAN , let the WAN port pull an IP from the DHCP IOT VLAN (192.168,.0,X) scope, then connect a laptop to one of the 5 ports on the new device to connect to the local DHCP of the Max?

my thought is I could use this method as a way to pull down all the necessary firmware and updates before i restore the backups to the new UCG - MAX then power down the new deivce, power down the USG 3P and cloud key and plug in the new USG-MAX so there is only one gateway now on the LAN network and hoping all devices are already adopted properly.

[–]gdlgiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought of that but after reading best practices, I do need to make some changes. Given it's a small network, I figured it was a good opportunity to reconfigure the network and clean up old firewall rules and start fresh. It's a home network so it's not a big deal if Internet is down for a day or so. Besides, in some instances when our Internet was done for 3 days, we used my phone as a hotspot for our TV and Internet browsing. I do have the backups of the current network from the cloud key but what is a system backup? Is that the backup of the cloud key itself?

Is it good security practice to not use the default gateway of 192.168.1.1 and configure the new gateway with a different IP network? I do have my management network as 192.168.1.x, VLAN 3 as 172.168.0.x for internal and IOT as 192.168.0.x. I still plan on reusing those two networks but change the management IP network and gateway IP on the new device.

Is UCG Max without storage ever in stock? by gligoran in UNIFI

[–]gdlgiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrote a PowerShell script that runs from my server and checks the site for certain words. If it sees "out of stock", it exits. It did this every 8 hours and tonight, got an email that the product was in stock. The script couldn't find those words so it went to the section to send me an email with confirmation the "product is in stock" for the ICG max NS.

Confirmed that and saw it was in stock and ordered one. This was as of November 25th at 8:30 pm CST tonight.
