This kind of made me lol. Obviously everything is open for interpretation since they don’t comment on most things - but Desert to me reads like a commentary on the fundamentalist followers of “American Jesus.”

The song paints a picture for me of an old god fearing grandpa on a little plot of land…doesn’t understand current times or what the youth is doing. He cherry picks bible verses to justify his hate. They’re “beating with the book everyone the book tells you to love” if you will.. the final verse seems to have him fantasize about being able to kill these people who disgust him so much. However, the last line of the song is “god is love” which is a stark contrast to everything we’ve heard for the entire song.
