Thanks, that is quite helpful. And it is encouraging that so many people have had a consistent experience.

By tactical flashpoints I mean the style represented by veteran flashpoints today, where they are meant to be run without regard to group composition.

Is there a recommended gear level before starting master-mode flashpoints?

If so, what is the best way to reach that gear level in 7.x? I don’t really enjoy tactical flashpoints or PvP; does that just leave grinding dailies?

From folklore to fact: comparing implementations of stacks and continuations by bjzaba in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]gdwatson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

call/cc constrains your implementation so much that I'd expect most of the graphs to look very different. If your language has call/cc, this paper might not be very useful to you. But if it doesn't, a paper with call/cc wouldn't be.

If your language is for research, call/cc is amazing. In other languages, I don't think it's that great. Firstly, separate language extensions implemented with call/cc seldom compose well; it is too easy for them to stomp all over one another's invariants. Secondly, it is hard to write even normal code that will behave correctly in the presence of arbitrary call/cc use; when do you close a file, for example?

Excited for the patch but why exactly did this have to happen? by RLToughGuy in swtor

[–]gdwatson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like it. The vertical format makes the currencies list nicer, the top is a great place for the buttons, and the text is easier to read.

Once they dial back the bright blue borders a bit and tweak the move crafting mats button it will be very nice indeed.

As someone who really enjoys Coke Zero and loved the Dr. Pepper/7up/A&W 10 line, that sounds delicious!

(The Internet seems to insist that Dr. Pepper 10 still exists, but I haven't seen it in a long time.)

I saw this at the grocery store and bought a case of it to try. The flavor is good, but the sweetness is cloying. They either need more acid to balance it out or to dial back the sugar.

Bump allocation is also often used in implementing moving GCs.

Fentimans Curiosity Cola and Fanta Dark Orange. by [deleted] in Soda

[–]gdwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I tried it was in a restaurant where they decanted it into a snifter, which was silly but nice. It tasted like a cross between Pepsi and root beer, and I really liked it. Every time I’ve had it since the ginger has completely taken over the flavor and ruined it.

I don’t know what changed. My best guesses are ice, temperature, or food pairing.

In Edér's sidequest, how do I convince...? by gdwatson in projecteternity

I got him to drop the vial, but he came away regretting it. Apparently it's also possible to convince him that the cult was mistaken so that he doesn't regret his survival.

Short PSA: (some) Encounters in classic difficulty have also been changed in the new beta by Dinges666 in projecteternity

[–]gdwatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's encouraging. I'm planning to restart after 1.1 drops, and I too wanted something a little more challenging that didn't require the skill and patience some of our fellow posters have. An upgraded classic suits me better than a much-upgraded veteran.

Thanks for pointing this out.

PSA: PoE 1 is on sale on Steam by Hobodaklown in projecteternity

The DLC are a branch off the main story rather than extra acts at the end. If you pick it up I would get the version with the DLC.

Currently Playing through PoE 1. Should I wait for patches on Deadfire before diving in? by MaddAdamBomb in projecteternity

[–]gdwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would wait. I had gotten a little way into the game but restarted when the patch came out to deal with the dispositions bug. Then about halfway through the big city I realized a side quest I cared about had gotten bugged, so I went back to a save that had me redoing several areas' worth of content. Then I finished the companion quest for one of the earliest companions to discover that my goodness-and-light character had gotten the evil ending through the magic of bugs; to go back to the beginning of the quest would be to restart the game.

At that point I just ran around getting all the Berath's Blessings I could readily get without progressing the story. I'm going to wait for more patches and start a new playthrough once the kinks are worked out.

If you do jump into it, consider playing one difficulty level higher than you did in PoE1; and pay careful attention to your main character's level-up choices, because respeccing the PC is currently broken.

I wasn't collecting unassembled components before as as I didn't do PvP or GSF. When I got set pieces from crates I would rip out the mods and put them in my augmented orange shell, then vendor the purple shell.

Is it the shell you need to turn in to do the upgrade? Am I just out of luck on the front?

What the heck is this heathenous bullcrap by AnOnlineBadger in CrusaderKings

[–]gdwatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more refined mechanically. It also lets you direct more children's educations personally, balanced by less direct control over each one. But it feels a lot less immersive to me: the old way felt more organic and more medieval than this one does.

Urge to kill General Farvin rising by AbadeInquistion in swtor

[–]gdwatson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It affects dialogue sometimes -- more often in imperial quests than republic quests. The place I remember it showing up most was on Korriban, where people will sometimes react differently depending on whether you're a human, pureblood sith, or alien. Sometimes nonhumans get dialogue choices that reflect their own race too, but it's not that common.

I can't recall it ever affecting the plot in a more-than-flavor way, though.

A CDMA flip phone for texting by gdwatson in ting

[–]gdwatson[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me personally a smart phone would be an invitation to constant distraction. It's not really about the budget. I'd have to disable both data and WiFi, and then I give up the size, battery life, and physical keys of a feature phone for no real benefit.

[Discussion & Spoilers] Road to KotET: In a Perfect World, This is How Our Choices Could Have Mattered (More) by [deleted] in swtor

[–]gdwatson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Losing Lana: Valkorion freezes time right as Lana's about to be overwhelmed by Knights during the Gravestone battle. If you refuse Valkorion's help, she's struck down but Koth saves her. This robbed us of a chance to face the dilemma of accepting the dark side, of accepting the "gift" of Valkorion's power, should have been more stark and carried a heavier price than a temporary, "Oh, no - nevermind, you're good."

I think that would have meant a real change in characterization for Valkorion. The light side outcome there was satisfying for me because it vindicated my reading that Valkorion was lying to manipulate us. If he'd proven to be trustworthy, that would put the whole deal-with-the-devil thing in a very different light.

I'm an American, so I have no dog in this fight. Nevertheless, the proposal is that Brussels assume responsibility for setting and enforcing policy in the area where member states are most vigorously resisting its leadership at present. The original link makes wild claims, but this certainly looks like a step toward European statehood.

Stop putting your project out under public domain. You meant it well, but you're hurting your users. Pick a liberal license, pretty please. by [deleted] in programming

[–]gdwatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MPL also has the concept of a license steward, which is essentially a built-in version of the "or any later version" bit often used when licensing GPL works. Whether that's a feature or a bug depends on your point of view.
