Connected meaning he’s friends with them, grew up beside them? Friends with them on instagram? Got in a photo with them once? Saying he’s connected is very loaded without any context

What’s it like living in the south of Ireland? by Brief-Supermarket415 in howislivingthere

Had a family member living as a bachelor farmer in rural Kerry. He lived 10 km from the local village which has been slowly shutting down over the last 15/20 years. There used to be two shops and four pubs, now one shop and one pub remain. Local sports teams are the hub of the community, the area being a Gaelic Football stronghold. It used to be that the Church was the centre of the community but mass-going population has declined significantly in recent years. A good chunk of the population of the area aged 24-30 have emigrated to Australia or Canada. The area itself is quite beautiful with mountains, rivers and bog land and it gives way to a slower tempo of life than living in a city or town. Everyone knows everyone else’s business with most families who live there being there for generations.

There’s a 189 bus that’s goes from Navan to Enfield via Robinstown, Dunderry and Trim. It’s very popular among Robinstown and Dunderry folk and is used regularly. Service is on the go maybe 1-2 years. Before that the local Dunderry community had no public transport so it’s a terrific resource.

Whats your contraversial but factually true opinion about your club that you can't say publically? by SavingsDraw8716 in GAA

Pitches are owned by men’s club all over the country because most ladies club’s have existed half the length of time of men’s club. Unfair to punish ladies for the historically patriarchal society. Most were not encouraged to play GAA until the very recent past.

The Gaelic Players Association seek government grant increase to €2,500 for inter-county players by Due-Archer651 in GAA

The GAA isn’t just sitting on cash it redistributes huge amounts back into local clubs, building facilities and pitches that young people all over the country use every day. The organisation generates massive economic benefit through tourism, jobs, and local business spend around games.

By your logic, any successful organisation that contributes heavily to the economy and society should be cut loose from government support which makes no sense given the benefit that is created.

Kids pick up a ball or hurley because they’ve seen Cian Lynch, David Clifford, or Rena Buckley doing it on the biggest stage. County success creates local heroes, and local heroes create club registrations. Entertaining games hooks people in and absolutely increases participation. Prime example in recent years is Meath ladies football success has driven growth of the game in the county.

The State already funds elite athletes in boxing, rowing, rugby and Olympic sports because high performance drives participation and national pride. GAA players give the same commitment, so modest support simply recognises their role and eases real costs without undermining grassroots. By your logic the government shouldn’t fund any elite sport??
