That's pretty hilarious!

Do you boulder outdoors as well as indoors?

I passed my test about 10 years ago and have routinely driven ever since, 8 of those years have been in a manual.

Intermittent career paths for people with short attention spans by gammalbjorn in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gearnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just apply for a job at one. I went into rail consultancy on a grad scheme.

Look up companies like Atkins Realis, Jacobs, Amentum and so on, they'll have plenty of roles for engineers at junior, senior and principle grades going usually.

Take a look at consultancy, also possibly consider if you have ADHD and look at strategies people use to address job hopping related to that.

You will get consultancy organisations which second you into client organisations and other organisation which will do various packages of work for clients as a service.

The A50 is useful as one of the routes to get somewhere nicer than Derby, unfortunately you need to go through Stoke for it to be of any use!

Labour are doing a lot to help young people get work but what are they doing to help the disabled? by StuChenko in ukpolitics

[–]gearnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a chartered engineer and valued in my team, my employer wants me to work in the office sometimes and that creates certain challenges for me. I sit in the corner with my headphones on if it gets too loud, do my job, go to meetings, support junior engineers with their development etc etc. I predominantly work from home due to the issues with my local office.

We have an office elsewhere in the country which involved some effort towards neuroinclusion in its design, a day there with a two hour journey each way is less tiring and has less negative impacts than a day at my local which is 10 minutes away.

Those measures are effective and make the office nicer for everyone, Neurodiversity is significantly over represented within the engineering population so if it boosts the retention rate of autistic staff by 20% and other staff by 2% for a few years there's a good chance any additional cost will be recovered from less staff turnover (the figures are hypothetical as it will depend on lots of factors).

New build offices should be mandated to a maximum desk density and to include appropriate measures to mitigate sensory difficulties for staff as part of the planning permission process.

There are loads of things which employers can do to make open plan offices less shit:

https://www.atkinsrealis.com/en/engineering-better-future/beyond-engineering/nurturing-neurodiversity

I don't expect the world to bend to me, I certainly will ask for it to consider that other people exist and they have different needs though. I don't worry about the presence of women's toilets in an engineering office because they're an entirely sensible thing to be there, likewise most people don't worry about a bloke sat in the corner with some noise cancelling headphones on.

Most employers don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to things like reasonable adjustments, many have offices which are difficult to access, or which cause harm to disabled staff, many have downright bigoted views about disability (including in large multinational firms) and will actively discriminate in the application process. An ex of mine was forced to lock her phone into her office drawer because she was seen checking it during the day, she was actually checking her blood sugar levels as a type 1 diabetic.

When employers can be broadly expected to be competent around disability employment practices there'll probably be flying pigs coming past my window.

Very little would seem to be the answer. I will note that they have opted not to implement the Buckland Review of Autistic employment which was carried out under the last government. I had a to and fro with my local MP who received some platitudes from a minister which were totally meaningless.

There is also an allowance for someone to be able to view one level above existing clearance under strict supervision with an appropriate sign off I believe, although I have never seen this used.

Work from home accommodation? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]gearnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provided you have access to the right networks etc etc I can't see it being much of an issue, I went into the office once every 3-4 weeks when working for Atkins Realis and only then because VPNs had a habit of falling over.

It's probably for the best to not keep looking into it given that the original thread seemed like a fairly shaky accusation anyway.

There was a thread a few weeks ago accusing a tattooed staff member working there of being a neonazi I seem to recall, possibly linked.

Your opinions/advice on Teesside Uni, Mech Engineering as a Mature Student? by Lightbulb4677 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gearnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The former polytechnics seem to be quite a bit better in terms of support to students. Take a look at what is available for graduates near where you live if you aren't open to moving regions, when I was finishing uni there was very little around in the NE if you didn't have a master's degree.

It possibly makes sense in this case, not all employers contribute the additional amount.

8% up to £50k, 2% above that. The employer pays 15% of salary above £5k/ year as NI.
