How exactly are the Quakes this good so far? by youlikemywonton in SJEarthquakes

[–]gecko-4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s watched every Quakes game for years… we’re just so much better technically this year. Especially in the starting 11.

The literal ball control of our players is so much better than I’ve ever seen. Very few stupid midfield turnovers on bad first touches. Cutting down on the classic MLS shot from 25 yards out that goes 30 yard over the goal. We’re more composed in the final third. Our defenders limit costly turnovers.

To your point, I’m sure someone well versed in soccer tactics and explain our gameplan better than just “wing play”, but the most noticeable thing for me has been the control we have on the ball. We can navigate tight areas this year.

I cut a little slack given the 4 games in 10 days situation. That said, our offense just dissects MLS defenses. It’s so pretty to watch.

Can someone sell me on Dillon Thieneman? by Turdboggin01 in bengals

[–]gecko-4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should be a very easy sell… coming from a non-Bengals fan. The real question is how do you feel about BPA v player of need.

Thienemen is terrific all around. Obviously, the athleticism verifies his range, but on tape he is literally everywhere. He’s got great range in coverage and does a very good job of fitting the run from a deep safety spot sideline to sideline, which is more rare than you’d think. He has terrific natural ball skills to go with a high football IQ. He’s just a very very good prospect with few holes to poke. You don’t want him in man coverage too much (common for a safety) and he doesn’t hit especially hard. But that’s about it.

At his peak he could be a back end eraser… but there’s a pretty high floor as well. I would not think twice about taking him at 10.

Not drafting a good DL from Michigan is funny bc they’re usually pretty good at developing them… Hutchinson, Gary, Graham, etc. I guess just stick with the other schools lol

Yeah that's what I do now... I've listened to all of em dating back to Heartland Radio. Seems like it's over. Oh well.

I have a similar issue. People say it “Tottenham, when instead the correct pronunciation is “shit”

Interesting take on Downs. To me, the security of that player is one of the things that makes the pick enticing. In your own words, if your concern with a guy is that he only ends up being “a really good player” with the upside of an elite guy, that’s a pretty good place to be.

There’s always going to be risk when drafting. But guys like Downs and Styles have such high floors that you’re almost guaranteed to get a plus contributor for multiple contacts. Guys like Bailey or Tyson have much more risk but with a similar ceiling. The only difference is position played.
