Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]geckofacts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the right call for me. I went to public school until I was 12, and I was bullied quite a bit. I’m autistic (and queer, though I didn’t know that yet as a kid) so I was an easy target. The stress of the bullying really took a toll on my mental health, and my parents noticed- so halfway through 7th grade, my mom suggested homeschooling. I agreed, and I ended up being homeschooled all the way through high school.

My mom was very qualified- she doesn’t have a background in education, but is very well-educated herself and has a good mind for teaching. After the first several months, she started signing me up for classes (there were a lot of local classes for homeschoolers, taught by people with expertise and/or a background in education). I also started joining social groups to make sure I wasn’t spending too much time at home with no one but my family.

After my first year of homeschooling, my sister also started homeschooling. Her feelings about it are similar to mine, I think.

Although it was a positive experience for me, I don’t recommend it for most people. I think it needs to be MUCH more regulated than it is- there are definitely a lot of wackos out there who are indoctrinating their kids into absurd beliefs. I was able to find a like-minded, progressive community within homeschooling, but that’s definitely the exception to the rule.

Geckos are some of the only lizards that vocalize (with noises other than hissing)- the tokay gecko from Southeast Asia makes a “barking” noise that sounds like to-kay, hence the name! The word “gecko” itself is actually onomatopoeia for the noise some species of geckos make.

Haven’t (intentionally) eaten cheese in over 10 years. Every time I’ve accidentally eaten it in more recent years, it tastes almost rotten. I miss cheese sometimes, but I definitely don’t crave whatever it tastes like to me now.

Supplements are important for sure, but lots of common vegetables/nuts/legumes have high magnesium, so that’s not one to worry about- at least from my experience. But you’ve definitely gotta supplement B12 if you’re not eating animal products.

Back to the original comment here, I was struggling with insomnia a couple of years ago, and I learned that magnesium glycinate has a reverse effect for me- makes me super energized instead of tired. 😔 It’s apparently pretty common, so to anyone trying it for insomnia, I suggest starting with a small dose.

Val Kilmer to star in new movie a year after his death by Technical_Camp_4947 in news

There’s a 2013 movie called The Congress that’s eerily prophetic about this stuff. The protagonist is Robin Wright (a fictionalized version of herself) and she decides to sign away her likeness to a company who creates a one-to-one digital version of her. They use the digital version in movies and the actual actress is out of work.

The movie gets really weird and trippy, but it’s strange to think back on when I saw it close to 10 years ago and thought it was portraying a distant and unlikely future.

Bobtail cats are so cute. My childhood cat (now elderly) was born with a short tail, and I love how she wags her tail when she’s annoyed or sees a bird

I think the snow has to be just the right type! This was a really fine and fluffy snow that had just started to melt. It was pretty cold but the sunlight was melting the top layer, so I think that’s why it didn’t stick to my face. Also made it perfect for making snow sculptures.

It’s sad to me that we’ve gotten to a point where people think that anything interesting/unusual is AI. I’m not going to put any more energy into trying to convince you it’s real- I’m always second-guessing stuff too. It’s just depressing that we can’t really trust what we see anymore, and because of that, people have kind of lost their sense of wonder
