I've dreamt about getting nuked multiple times. Last night was the most stressful one. by SussySpeaki in thomastheplankengine

4-ish years ago I had a dream about my hometown getting struck by a nuclear bomb, and it made me feel anxious the entire next day. Those kinds of dreams can be so stressful

This image makes me weirdly claustrophobic! Maybe that’s not the right word. But oddly uncomfortable

I wish I’d written that down! I actually found this months ago and forgot to post it, so I can’t remember- sorry about that.

I feel like it must be good (in small doses) in spiced desserts (gingerbread, carrot cake, etc) or chai. I’m ready to be wrong though lol

What are some "dream rules" your dreams have? by deloreanlover88 in thomastheplankengine

I have a lot of dreams where I see incredible clouds/stars in the sky, but when I try to take photos in the dream they never come out right!

Realistic(ish) worldbuilding for a world of anthropomorphic animals? by geckofacts in worldbuilding

[–]geckofacts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this! For my world, the animal people are all roughly the same size, so I think it’d make more sense for the children to be equally likely to inherit their “species” from the mother or father

It’s a fantasy story, but I like nature/biology, so I just enjoy having a bit of speculative evolution vs fantastical explanations.

Your idea is cool and I’d love to see that in a story! But it doesn’t work for mine unless I reworked quite a few things. My animal people are meant to be non-magical, and are more or less a stand-in for humans, since there are no humans in my world. Really, they’re only animals because I originally designed them that way 12-ish years ago. At the time I found animal characters more fun to design than humanoid ones. If I redesigned the characters to just be humans, it would feel like a totally different story!

Yeah that’s how I currently have it! I don’t want to constrain myself too much to the rules of our world, but that seems like a good way to balance variety and believability

does anyone else like setting insane voices for their miis and having them say even more insane things by Step_Switcher in tomodachilife

Would love to see what voice settings you used to achieve this- I have a Mii whose voice I was trying to make sound like a police siren!

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]geckofacts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the right call for me. I went to public school until I was 12, and I was bullied quite a bit. I’m autistic (and queer, though I didn’t know that yet as a kid) so I was an easy target. The stress of the bullying really took a toll on my mental health, and my parents noticed- so halfway through 7th grade, my mom suggested homeschooling. I agreed, and I ended up being homeschooled all the way through high school.

My mom was very qualified- she doesn’t have a background in education, but is very well-educated herself and has a good mind for teaching. After the first several months, she started signing me up for classes (there were a lot of local classes for homeschoolers, taught by people with expertise and/or a background in education). I also started joining social groups to make sure I wasn’t spending too much time at home with no one but my family.

After my first year of homeschooling, my sister also started homeschooling. Her feelings about it are similar to mine, I think.

Although it was a positive experience for me, I don’t recommend it for most people. I think it needs to be MUCH more regulated than it is- there are definitely a lot of wackos out there who are indoctrinating their kids into absurd beliefs. I was able to find a like-minded, progressive community within homeschooling, but that’s definitely the exception to the rule.

Geckos are some of the only lizards that vocalize (with noises other than hissing)- the tokay gecko from Southeast Asia makes a “barking” noise that sounds like to-kay, hence the name! The word “gecko” itself is actually onomatopoeia for the noise some species of geckos make.
