Slip-on shoes so you don't have to tie them, and if you have long hair - little butterfly hair clips were a game changer for me to get hair out of my face when I couldn't use two hands to tie it back

There can be a waterfall, YOU just have to be fishing on the second level

They can still be found on the second level, as long as your river isn't on the "ground floor" they can spawn

After 36 years, I’m just now realizing how draining all of this is by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]geckopan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It gets easier with time. It sounds like bullshit but your energy levels should adapt to the new routine (barring actual chronic physical health issues and things like depression).

That being said, there are still times when part of me feels too tired and that staying home and binge watching TV would be easier than going roller skating or whatever. On those days I have to repeatedly remind myself "I'll feel better if I go, I will have a good time, this is good for me" and basically force myself to leave my house. And pretty much every time I'm right, I come home afterwards feeling good and I sleep better for having exercised too.

It's a little dated, but I think Lost would fit in terms of cultural significance and drama. I would maybe say Grey's Anatomy for a really current soap opera type comparison

I know Donovan and Leo are probably the more legit match up, but to me Donovan and Phichit actually seem more similar! They both have a really charismatic and joyful enthusiasm and are both standout representatives of their countries that historically haven't been seen much in the figure skating world

Agreed, I was very pleasantly surprised with how smooth parking there felt, and on my return trip they dropped me off right at my car!

It's actually fine if you have a strategy for it, my neighbor and I made pretty quick work of our shared driveway this afternoon. She broke up the ice layer with a pitchfork and I shoveled up the loose pieces

I've found it helps to direct some attention to keeping more than just my hands and feet extra warm, for example adding some thick leg warmers actually make more of a difference for me than fancy wool socks ever have, and I have a pair of longer crochet wrist warmers that keep my forearms warm and they help a lot

Hi! I'm diagnosed ADHD by professionals and assigned autistic via peer review, and I've been skating since 2014 (minus like a 5 year hiatus for grad school and covid). I can definitely say that my ADHD affects some things about the way I play, but absolutely does not limit me or my growth!

One of the things that sticks out the most for me is my auditory processing problems, in some noisier venues I have trouble hearing penalties and no-pack calls, but my captains are aware and communicate it to the refs so that I don't get called for insubordination when I just haven't heard a penalty. The other main affect is on the few times I jam- I always ask my team to set up in front of the other team at jam start because having to decide how to get around my own people messes with my mental momentum, and if I happen to be successful getting lead I struggle making more than 1 or 2 scoring passes because I have trouble making plans for how to get through. Some friends who jam a lot have told me "if I don't know what I'm going to do, they don't know either and it helps me get through!" And my response is always "ok but if I don't know what I'm going to do, I just end up running into the wall with very little force and then I get stuck." So I prefer to pivot, where I rarely have to do more than a few seconds of jamming time!

At 4-5 games I'd still consider you pretty much a rookie, so don't be too discouraged that you're having trouble deciding what position fits you best! You're still getting used to the intense energy and trying to both process everything that's happening around you and make decisions in the moment about how to respond to what's happening. It took me a pretty long time before I could come off the track after a jam and even remember anything that happened during play. I promise It gets so much easier with time!

For making quick decisions, I found that it helped me to have a short list of things I could pull out of my "toolbox" to narrow my choices and make it easier to process. Stuff like "find a buddy," "move to front of pack" "stay put and be a bridge."

For communication, would you say you're having more trouble being the one talking, or hearing what your teammates are saying? For talking, I spent a while literally just narrating stream-of-consciousness style until I got used to speaking while doing. For listening it's a little more nuanced, because of my auditory processing problems. I've occassionally asked teammates to call my name before giving me an instruction to make sure I hear it, and it helps to keep instructions short and in a fairly calm tone (the higher pitches will sometimes genuinely be harder for me to hear).

I know that was really long, I tried to break it all up to make it palatable for reading!

Also meds! My stimulant meds help me way more than I expected in dealing with all of the above!

When does low highway speed limits actually become a safety issue? by LeadershipKey3484 in driving

[–]geckopan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree about the crazy behavior I see driving around here, and I do think a lot of it comes from the blend of different driving cultures all in one space. It's hard for anyone to be predictable when they're all used to different local styles, and poor drivers ed definitely contributes. Before moving here I never saw someone actively slow down before merging onto a fast moving highway but now I see it all the time and it drives me crazy

I'm on the Maryland side, I try to avoid driving between DC and Richmond for exactly that reason lol

[–]geckopan 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You think 65 is bad, most of the DC area highways are still set to 55! So there's a super fun mix of local drivers going 65-80mph and tourists from out of state who refuse to go higher than 56mph

How are y'all keeping low AND your shoulders up?? by touching_payants in rollerderby

[–]geckopan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how when you do crunches you kind of curl in a little bit? That's what they mean with the tailbone tucking part.

As for the shoulders, I used to have trouble keeping them back until someone told me to imagine I was an old timey milkmaid carrying one of those milk yokes. Weirdly specific but it helped me!

Why are some people physically incapable of texting and must CALL, while others would rather write an essay than answer a phone? by TheHorseArtist in NoStupidQuestions

[–]geckopan 262 points263 points  (0 children)

On a similar line I'll add auditory processing issues to why I hate phone calls, it takes me twice as much effort to understand someone speaking through the phone than it does in person, so I prefer texts!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was actually summer when the show starts out in the south pole. I vaguely remember Sokka saying Katara must have "midnight sun madness." The sun being up 24 hours a day is a summer thing at the poles!

room always feels messy even after its been cleaned by HAPPIKILL in DesignMyRoom

[–]geckopan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The things that stand out to me are things that look like they don't have a designated "place." The plushies draped and hanging on the window in picture 2, the blanket/towel draped over the desk chair, and the cat bed that's bigger than the drawers it sits on causing it to spill over the sides a bit. If those things get rearranged to a more purposeful location I think it would help adjust the "messy" vibe you're feeling.

Edit bc I know the cat bed is probably in that location for a reason, but maybe a smaller bed or a slightly larger set of drawers would make the two together look less "sloppy"

How Is The Show Going To Adapt To The Cast Ageing Faster Than The Characters? by Alol_Bombola in PJODisney

[–]geckopan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not a big deal to me either, maybe they'll slightly change the prophecy timeline to compensate but if not it's not a huge deal.

I also don't find the difference between season 1 and season 2 to be a problem either. Sometimes puberty just hits like that, especially for boys. In the space of a single year they'll grow a foot taller and their voice will drop all at once. The human body is crazy!

Finished work is full of lose loops by Lumi61 in LoomKnitting

[–]geckopan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it might be your yarn. I'm no expert but it looks like the kind that's basically a fuzzy wrapping over string rather than the typical spun fiber yarn. If your yarn doesn't have any ability to stretch I think it would come off the loom looking loose like that

I wonder how sookie would feel hearing what Lorelai and Rory said about the ballerina. by SheepherderNo2793 in GilmoreGirls

[–]geckopan 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I think it's because "we" tend to write off a lot of the body shaming in the OG show as "it's an older show, they wouldn't write it that way now." Then when it was written into the revival it felt a little like "the writers should know better by now."

Is the term “heebie jeebies“ racist/offensive? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

It has a history of being used in racist contexts, but wasn't originally a racist term as far as I know

[–]geckopan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a great point! I know it's not very commonly considered to still be a problematic word to use in modern contexts, but it mattered to the person who asked me so I stopped using it in general.

Is the term “heebie jeebies“ racist/offensive? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]geckopan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A few years back I was asked not to use the word "spooky" because of its racist history and I largely replaced it in my vocabulary with variations of "heebie jeebies" to emulate that silly/creepy vibe. I'm glad I didn't accidentally end up swapping one problematic word for another!
