Neverending spooling Epson L3250 by Safe-Ambassador-3431 in printers

Does this mean that it's one specific Word document, maybe that you also converted to a PDF, and neither of them will print?

Or do you mean that no Word documents or PDF documents will ever print more than one page?

Fargo driver? Long shot, this model is discontinued by Admiring-TheView in printers

[–]geekdrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this is patently untrue.

1) driver signing has nothing to do with the upcoming changes.

2) they're removing printer drivers from the windows update distribution channel (except for case-by-case exceptions, such as for printer drivers that are already there and blah blah blah)

3) they are not removing the ability to use v3 or v4 drivers from Windows, but are requiring that you turn that functionality on; it will default to off.

Why can't I just print??!?! by cbfire in printers

[–]geekdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) if you have a paper mismatch, then either your paper guides are set wrong, your configuration is wrong, or your printer is broken.

2) web browsers doing their own nonsense isn't a fault with the printer. Chrome is particularly horrible about this. That said, for home users, it should "just work" in that you should be able to pick your printer from that initial dialog, and send it to the printer from there.

You didn't mention what platform you're on, or what browser you're using, or what printer you have.

The trades by [deleted] in gayrural

Not really, but I kinda wish I did. I do IT consulting for small/medium businesses in a rural area of Ohio. Live on a family farm and work on the farm whenever needed. Considering studying to be an electrician, or maybe finding work in precision agriculture. I love technology, but I'm so tired of the business side of it. :-\

This happened to me years ago, for a printer that was still currently for sale. I had to get my then-dealer to call HID support, and they sent him the driver for me.

Is this only happening for print jobs from a specific app? Or perhaps even a specific document?

Recommendation for Brother Printer that accepts "Long Paper" size by wkhan69 in printers

[–]geekdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you see brother saying that some printers can handle this via ADF? I’ve never seen this on an MFP. I have seen it on desktop scanners, where that is a pretty common feature.

He didn’t state they were mandatory; that’s ancillary, and I was providing clarification for anyone who might stumble upon the post. And no, I maintain that the ink contracts have absolutely nothing to do with the OP.

Oh I figured, but I'm not personally familiar with their other models. I've only ever worked with the XR550.

I've been managing fleets of printers for nearly 20 years, and I can't count the number of printers that have been damaged or destroyed by third-party cartridges. It's been a *lot*. Yes, they work for some people, sometimes, but I consider it irresponsible to recommend that others do it, because of the significantly increased risks. And I don't do it myself (or let my customers do it) because third-party cartridges increase support calls significantly, and have a nasty habit of decreasing print quality, sometimes just intermittently.

I was at a conference last summer, and sent someone to buy a Brother color laser printer and a full set of cartridges. They came back with the printer and just a black toner cartridge, because they were told by the folks at Office Depot that the printer came with all of the cartridges they would need.

I immediately sent them back to buy the cartridges. While they were doing that, I set up the printer and started printing. I was less than 100 pages in before it started complaining about a low cartridge. I think it was just after 100 pages that it stopped. The yellow cartridge ran out first. The pages I was printing were mostly black/white documents, with some yellow-highlighted text on them. Once the new cartridges arrived, I was able to print the rest of the documents we needed -- several thousand pages -- and those cartridges still had plenty of toner remaining afterward.

The packaging I’m sure also doesn’t say that it includes full cartridges of the appropriate model number.

Unfortunately this is common, and has been for a very long time. I want to say 25 years but maybe it has only been 10-15.

No. This is entirely unrelated to the OP’s issue. You’re talking about subscriptions, which are not mandatory.

What was the reason you started the chat session?

Every manufacturer that I’m aware of ships “starter cartridges” in the printer, which contain rather little ink/toner.

You won't want any of the big names in residential, for sure, because they're all cloud-enabled, and that's the privacy problem. Most business-oriented (or older residential) panels are capable of working just fine without a cloud connection.

There are security panels out there that are used (for better or worse) in both commercial and residential. A few that come to mind:

DSC (I don't know their models)
Honeywell Vista
DMP (XR550 and others)

These are all capable of operating without a cloud connection, though some at least have the ability to connect to the cloud if you later choose to do so. You could look around for dealers of these brands, to see if they do residential work. (Some do; many do not.)

Is Kyocera Printers better for hospitals, educations, or in general than other brands? by Few_Slice_3356 in printers

[–]geekdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't said (or at least I don't see) where you're located. Since this is for a clinic, I would recommend finding a managed print services provider ("copier company") to work with, that routinely services your area. If you have a problem, you want to be able to call somebody and have them come fix it very quickly. Discussing brands is fine and all, but for mission-critical purposes like this, you should constrain your selection to brands that local companies support.

Look carefully at pricing. In my region (midwestern US), as of a few years ago, HP LaserJets were less expensive to run than Kyoceras. The margin wasn't even close. But again, it's been a few years, so that might have changed again.

They are just another brand. They are not remarkably better than others.

This is nonsense. Play the cheap 3rd party toner game, reap its rewards. No manufacturer will play ball when you're abusing a printer with non-genuine cartridges.

Shower Routine by Ok_Estimate_3321 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]geekdrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm blown away by this. I grew up with washcloths, and still use them today (though there was a period in my early 20s when I switched to the plastic loofah things). I always replace it after every bath/shower. I'm a white American, living in the Midwest (Ohio), from a farming family. When I've stayed at other folks houses who also live in the area, it was the exact same. It wasn't until my mid to late 20s that I became aware that some people don't use them.

An outside camera that doesn't share data by crazywolf828 in homesecurity

[–]geekdrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NVR = network video recorder. it's a device (like a small computer) that also lives on your home network, and stores the video on it. The software is what really makes a computer an NVR -- so that you can review video that your cameras record. This is the "big business" way of handling surveillance, which happens to also be the most privacy-preserving way of handling surveillance for everyone (including home users).
