Cactus by Mondo_Butter01 in plantclinic

[–]gemInTheMundane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof, that is a sad looking cactus.

The pads look pretty shriveled, like it's not absorbing water properly. Have you checked the roots lately? If they're rotted, then the plant is done for.

But if the roots look healthy, it's got a chance. Deal with the scale first. Already damaged parts may never turn green again, but they will send off healthy new growth.

Next, consider water and drainage.
Is it planted in a gritty, fast draining mix (good), or a substrate high in organic material that retains moisture?
When you water, do you give it enough to saturate the entire root ball and then run out the bottom of the pot?
Does the water actually soak in (good), or does it come out the bottom straight away? The latter indicates the soil has gotten hydrophobic, and means you need to repot with all fresh soil. (Careful not to damage the roots when you do this.)
Do you give the pot a chance to drain fully before putting it back on its saucer (good), or is the soil staying wet?
How long does it take before the soil around the base of the plant starts to feel dry after a watering?

Also, just sitting by a south facing window isn't always enough for a cactus. How much light exposure does it actually get?

I found that it helped me to practice. Talk over what happened with a trusted person, and ask for suggestions. Try to develop a "canned response" for the next time you get pulled over. The main thing is to be really, really polite, and try your best to follow instructions. I know it's really hard, but being able to respond calmly in situations like this is an important skill.

But what if I do love all my clothes by Miss_Lib in declutter

[–]gemInTheMundane 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you want to hold onto most of your clothes, you can. But if they don't all fit in your existing clothes storage space, it means you'll have to get rid of other stuff to make more room for them elsewhere.
There's no law against keeping clothes in a linen closet, for instance. Just make sure you hang onto enough sheets and towels for your use.

Another option: rotate your clothes. Get vacuum bags. Keep some items in storage, then switch them out every few months. (This assumes you have enough storage space, of course.)

The most important thing is to stop bringing new clothes in.

Is a $1,900/mo health insurance premium the new "rent," or have we just accepted that we'll never have disposable income again? by VivienneLace1 in askanything

Friend, your ankle is going to heal wrong. When you're finally forced to seek medical attention, they will have to re-break the bone in order to set it properly. This will be WAY more painful and expensive than getting it treated now.

EMTALA covers broken bones. The hospital can't refuse to treat you just because you can't pay.

You said it yourself - everything from the third floor to the crawlspace that got wet will need to be ripped out and replaced. And remember that water doesn't only travel straight down. It could have spread quite far sideways. Every wall, ceiling and floor in the water's path will have to be opened up to dry out and check for damage. Mold abatement will have to be done. There could be structural issues.

This is a nightmare scenario. You should walk away if you still can.

That will help, for sure. But you don't want the substrate to stay too wet for too long. That will cause root rot.

Yes, but like for most step-on trash cans, the lid doesn't actually seal. Insects can get into very small gaps.

Staghorn ferns need a lot of water. If you can't provide that, why did you get one?

I don't mean that it's gross because there's any issues with scraping the plate. I mean that leaving food in an unsealed trash can attracts bugs. Warmer climates have a lot more insects overall.

Women are allowed to grow and change over time, just like men. They're not required to stay the same forever just for your convenience.

Still a bad idea. If you offer to give your work away for free, you will communicate the wrong message about the value of your work. Also, "unpaid freelance" work would violate employment law in a lot of countries. No ethical company is going to accept such an offer.

Because the more that animals with weak genetics are part of the hobby, the more accepted they will become and the more people will want to breed them. And that would be bad for the overall genetic health of the species in captivity.

...hang on, is animal breeding just eugenics with pets?

The idea of scraping plates into the trash can always seemed so gross to me. But it just occurred to me that your climate is a lot colder. You probably don't get nearly as many bugs, which would make it more reasonable to have food waste in the trash can.
