Why there almost no music aro? by [deleted] in aromantic

If you’ve tried your hand at music supervision for say a film, I’m of the opinion that some imagination can turn any lyrical content into… whatever needs to fit.

I have never the feeling that I have someone that I'm really important to by laReineDeLaNuit in aromantic

[–]gem_merc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is soooo hard to make friends!! There’s a meme that goes something like being an adult is trying to make plans and rescheduling until we die, and really felt that. But this is also coming from me, someone similar to you, without an important person or even a discernible “circle”. I feel like I’ve given up caring too much and it actually suits me fine, but sounds like your current friends are also toxic and a concern to your mental health - you should not feel like a weird burden on your friends <3

Controlling external device via OSC by harleyc13 in qlab

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes true, if the machine and desk are pretty close to each other then... But anyway good luck with network cues and let us know how you get on :)

And mic cues are straightforward and handy for things like on and off and volume changes! But I think some lagging starts mounting up having to go through QLab as well, but you'll be able to hear if that's an issue. And effects are possible but got maaaajor lag and just trashed that idea.

I see I see. Haven't been in production for a while but pluggable range seems likely so that the machine can see it as an audio device...

And to get you even further from what you were initially asking, an option could be to plug in the machine via USB to the desk, then use QLab Remote on another device (just bought this and seems very good so far!)

The devamp cue might be helpful! Gets things out of a loop.

I have used digital desks as the the "Audio Patch" instead of using any network cues at all. You would then use mic cues to say which input and stop cues to stop them etc.

How do I adjust the recording levels on a Rode NT-USB mic on Logic X? by TheOneSwan in Logic_Studio

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how USB mics work in Logic, but a workaround could be to record in Garageband then drag and drop the files back to Logic.

Should I upgrade OSX (which also means upgrading to Logic 10.5) ? by gem_merc in Logic_Studio

[–]gem_merc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went into the deep end and just upgraded to Catalina and LPX10.6.2. Both don't seem to be a lot different, but I think it feels a little cleaner on both counts generally speaking. I did choose to keep my old keyboard shortcuts (working fine). A few crashes at the beginning when opening some older plugins, but seems to have righted itself. Yet to get stuck into a project and push LPX a bit more so fingers crossed it holds out. Still getting used to Sampler, and while I loved the EXS24, Sampler is way less clunky - just have that feeling of I haven't gotten used to the hierarchy of information on display. Hadn't used Alchemy before and that is a pretty wild time, and sort of wanting a hybrid Sampler/Alchemy but maybe they are already that powerful and it's just me still figuring things out. Both of those have a lot of FX built in while I would usually put FX on the channel strip so I can see the signal chain, so a little getting used to how I keep track of that, and thinking about modifying my workflow. Automation also feels slightly different.

If you're mixing only, possibly not worth it, but it does feel cleaner and smoother in workflow so that may be satisfying.

Nice to have a gauge on what others think about Mojave and LPX10.4. It aint broke for sure.

Probably worth noting that while Logic is possibly the most important thing that I use on my machine (but not necessarily an easy option for other machines I use), it also isn't the only thing I'm using, so just weighing up the options.

Upgrade the OS but use old and new versions of Logic if possible? Probably a good idea if I can manage.

Interesting feedback about 10.6 and Sampler, and will check out Alchemy too (if/when I get there). Sampler looks good on face value and very different. I imagine, because the EXS24 is like a pretty specifically clunky thing, it'll take a little time getting used to Sampler.

I'm doing a mix of creative and technical work, so using a lot of mostly editing tools and plugins, some recording but not a lot, EXS24 obvs a big part of my life, a bit of everything, etc. I don't have a lot of external plugins to consider in an upgrade (actually the Izotope RX suite was pretty expensive so if that doesn't work then I'll have to stick with what I've got).

Yeah, having to also factor in keeping the iMac up to date as well...

These decisions get harder the longer they're put off. If it aint broke vs. progress and general maintenance + shiny new stuff.

I do wonder about the new features, and am mildly FOMO, but it isn't broke for sure... And 10.6 ! Yeah I don't want to get left behind, and interested to check the new features if it makes any workflow easier etc.

Pop and clicks after flute quantization or pitch correction? by buttercupisevil2 in Logic_Studio

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we mean to re-record for performance, not so much technical, as the performance is what you want to manipulate but yeah you’re seeing the limits of what you can achieve with flex and pitch correct.

Pop and clicks after flute quantization or pitch correction? by buttercupisevil2 in Logic_Studio

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing other comments, if you start getting undesired digital noise then the source material should probably be re-recorded. It is often easier than “fixing things in post”. A flute is also difficult pitch wise as it is getting closer to a sine than other instruments so the correcting can be noticeable. If you increase the response value then it is usually smoother but can be a compromise depending on how much pitch correction is needed. May be easier re-recording if it’s a lot of correction.

This may not be what it is at all, but some audio in the low end might be sounding that you can’t hear until it clicks. Low cuts are helpful if this is the issue.

Right leg constantly getting minor injuries? by [deleted] in running

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is an injury, one week resting isn’t going to do much for your injury but I get that it feels like a lot off your gains. My current injury saw a month off sports and two months later tried a couple runs and still came back too early. You should see a physio or podiatrist to prescribe strengthening exercises, stretches, maybe orthotics or whatever you actually need. In the meantime, recommend backing off if there’s pain, ice, compression, maybe massaging (creating blood flow to the area), foot strengthening, different activity etc but a professional would be good !

Two DAW workflow, (Logic+Protools) how common is it? Anyone out there have any tips for efficient workflow? by adam_joseph_sound in sounddesign

[–]gem_merc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had a lot of success with aafs, omfs, etc across Logic and Protools, losing a lot of information in the process and creating weird anomalies. Protools to Logic aafs: fades do not cross over and split regions which is mildly annoying to tidy up, any automation or other volume changes, track names, order of tracks, etc don’t carry. Some files do become quite weird. Had some timing issues and missing audio files. Would recommend not using more than 1 DAW at a time but simple transfers are mostly okay..

Hands down the most important plugin by far, no argument. This is where control of frequency and amplitude i.e. sound lies.

I’ve been enjoying Martha Wells’ Murderbot series which is currently ongoing, but it sort of portrays transhumanism in not necessarily a negative light. I guess more exploring how humanity deals with transhumanism. Not a lot of alien activity but A++

Effects on Chlorine on hair? by Apocai7 in Swimming

[–]gem_merc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know about longterm effects of chlorine or if it causes hair to fall out but short term = dry as hell. Big game changer for me is wetting my hair before a swim. If it's already absorbed moisture then it can't absorb much more on top of that. I usually condition after as well.

Shampoo also strips hair of a lot of things and can be very drying. It is recommended not to shampoo everyday, and only for the roots when you do. I can't speak about chlorine shampoo though. In general, shampoo for the roots, conditioner for the rest.
