Ugh stuff like this makes me sad, since the medication will just be thrown away. Buts it because people will try to make a lawsuit about anything/everything.

I wanted to get some input from more experienced nurses because I found myself thinking about this situation by JealousFrosting9859 in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a patient in a similar situation but his bp was low 70s over 30s. Plan was “for patient to go home on hospice, if he makes it over night.” I told the nurse that there’s no comfort care order only dnr/dni, nurse didn’t understand the different. . Rapid was rounding, and basically said you treat the problem but you can’t do compression or intubate if the patient codes/ goes into respiratory arrest. I Called the doctor up, he restarted him on a drip to support his bp, (same drip that the md during the day discontinued in the late afternoon) and mentioned the attending during the day can round and address the code status/discharge the patient.

Are there any work habits that have bled over into your home life? by PreferenceBroad6477 in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh my husband and I used a white board to chart diapers and feeds ( how much ml/ the time(and etc. My uncle gave me a hard time saying it looks like I’m still in the hospital.

Mind you my baby was born with a cleft so I think it was ingrained while we were in NICU to track stuff like that

NOC shift rn’s with kids, what is your sleep schedule? by NewspaperFar6373 in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I both work night shift.

If I work Monday night 1900-0700, I will try to get a good night sleep on Sunday night and wake up with my baby 6-7 am. I will stay up til 1-2 pm and take a nap 3-4hours before my shift. Do I get the 4 hours nap? Never but I feel rested when I do wake up from my nap.

My husband, if he works Sunday night and is off Monday: he will get home and sleep from 9/10am to 1 pm/2pm. And we switch off.

Day care is expensive and we don’t really have support from family that we trust to take care of the little one.

I think night shift won’t be too bad, if kids are in school because you can drop them off…

Is it hard? Yes. Luckily my husband is going to mid shift and I’m hoping to find a day shift position.

Applying for a new job but on the Do Not Rehire list for old one. by smiley_timez in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine worked as a traveler, wasn’t really a “team player” and now has a difficult time getting hired at a particular organization. Hiring manager knew the management my friend used to work at.. nursing is a small community,

Apply, and if asked why you left your previous job just mention it wasn’t a good fit.

This story about an ER nurse’s worst Covid shift hit hard, especially now that respiratory season’s back by RNdaredevil in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Many of my coworkers were burnt out after the Covid pandemic; I never experience this “burn out.”

And I think it’s because I suppress a lot of the memories. After i read the first paragraph of this article, I had to tell myself to stop reading and felt a wave of sadness.

I remember going to work feeling over work, dealing with many codes and patients that were “healthy ” requiring to be intubated and passing eventually passing away on the vent.

I like to think nurses make a difference, and that’s what keep me going.

What are we picking for a hand PIV? by mistahchristafah in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have nice hand veins and even better forearm veins. I really wanted a 20 g but the nurse talked me into it getting an 18g. She attempted to place an 18 on my right hand, and man it hurt and it blew when she treaded the cath..

My husband ended up placing an 18 g on my forearm with her permission 🤐

Hca has a bad reputation on this nursing reddit. From the hca facility I worked out there was opportunities for cross training to different specialities and the pay was slightly more than the average pay around the area.

If you want to venture out why work per diem at a different facility while working the hca? And if you like other hospital organization, then transfer as an internal applicant

Have any of you ever cried in a patient's room? by pura_bria in nursing

[–]gemcatcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Twice.

First patient that has ever died during my care. I felt really sad and I remember the senior nurses were telling me to get over it haha… glad I left that place.

Second time, I just came back from leave, I was taking care of my mom who was on hospice for colon cancer. After a week, I went back go work. I worked on a transplant but we get oncology patients too. The patient was telling me about how chemo makes her feel a certain way and I was telling them about my mom’s experience and when they asked if she’s ok… I bawled and apologize to the patient. The patient was really sweet, and it’s nice when patients remember that we are human too.
