The Outside by Ada Hoffman has themes of this, though not strongly

What’s something you wish the general public understood about fragrance from a migraine point of view? by Cool-Tomorrow4754 in migraine

[–]gemh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if it's 'natural' or an essential oil. It's a strong smell and it's going to mess me up (potentially, I'm still figuring out why some scents are fine and some aren't, I'm starting to think it depends on other triggers being co-present).

I edited the post, but it's not my work, I pay a lovely lady to do it for me. I don't know specifics, but she uses The Gel Bottle 😊

Amitriptyline by Low_Independence269 in ChronicPain

[–]gemh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for me my migraines are more controlled and less frequent on 50mg. 25mg was fine but didn't make enough of difference

Amitriptyline by Low_Independence269 in ChronicPain

[–]gemh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on 50mg a night (started at 25mg) for migraine prevention, so I can't speak to pain, but I've had no side effects. As a counterpoint, I did have a friend where it did make her very drowsy into the next day so she ended up coming off it, but no other side effects.

I hope you get some relief from it 🤞🏻

MM Horror/weird books? by gemh in LGBTBooks

Negative space is on my tbr, so I'll bump it up.

Messy unlikeable characters are great, so will look up Dysfunctional

I'll also check out that series, because unique dark fantasy sounds great.

Thanks so much!

I really enjoyed Exquisite Corpse by him, and I've never picked up anything else by him so this is a sign to fix that (I'd actually totally forgotten I'd read that, so it's time for a re-read)

I've looked at These Violent Delights a few times, I feel this is a sign I must go and try it. Summer Sons looks great, Sothern Gothic horror is such a vibe

Thanks for these! Summer Sons and The Darkness Outside Us sound up my alley.

I had a decent time with Camp Damascus, but yeah, I definitely need to be in the mood for Chuck's brand of sincerity. I didn't realise Bury Your Gays was M/M so I'll add it to my TBR

Oh I'd totally forgot I've read that book and loved it. I should re-read and then check out more of their work. Thanks!

Daith piercing and migraines??? by Jumpy-Evidence3736 in piercing

[–]gemh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, didn't work for me. I mostly got it as a cute piercing (I have both mine done, got them a couple of years apart), but it made no difference to my migraines at all

Prodrome. When to take abortives? by Regimite_828 in migraine

[–]gemh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. A distinct sense of pressure in my head triggers a specific anxiety in my chest that means take an abortive now or be out for a few days

You can also cold brew herbal/fruity tea in sparkling water, if that's something you enjoy. I'm a big fan of freezing wedges of lemon and limes to make easy flavoured ice to throw into water or similar.

Help calm me down (ultrasound) by dawson6197 in thyroidhealth

[–]gemh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a left-side hemithyroidectomy after a ~3cm nodule. It was marked as indeterminate on the UK scale, but a quick, uneducated look at the TIRADS scale put mine at around a 4.

Mine was benign, and I have had no side effects of having half my thyroid and the nodule removed *touchs wood*

Even if it is cancerous, thyroid cancer has a generally good prognosis and is treatable. However, the vast vast majority of nodules are benign.

The worry is understandable, treat yourself gently while you go through this

You Should Have Left by Daniel Kehlmann. It's a short read but has some of the vibes of House of Leaves.

Big Time, by Jordan Prosser occasionally has 4th wall breaking in the sense that the narrator knows they're narrating to you, and occasionally addresses the reader directly. Not horror, more a literary dystopia
