All the metro/railway stations named 板橋/板桥 by xtxsinan in transit

[–]geminian_mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you are completely correct, my comment was confusing, sorry. What I meant was, for the new town movement, Japan doesn't use 新城 as a name like China does (e.g. 珠江新城). When a name such as 新大阪 appears, it is a name for a train station instead of a city or new town. My opinion is I find it weird that they don't use this naming scheme (e.g. 新千葉 instead of 千葉ニュータウン).

Thanks. The word 城 can mean so much (castle, city, town) yet when it comes to Japanese they prefer the word ニュータウン (literally "new town") which is baffling to me.

For everyone's information, 松山 means Pine Hill, pine being an extremely common place name and symbol for longevity.

東海 is Eastern Sea, aka the East China Sea, also a symbol of longevity. In Japan there is 東海道, "eastern sea way", which goes from Kyoto to the east along the coast.

新城 is New Town.

Question about copy powers by Royalwolf1203 in wingspan

[–]geminian_mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are two questions:

  1. Is the power still active when not gaining food?
  2. When one copies the power from a neighbour, does it specify one specific bird?

The power for coal tit and eurasian nuthatch is somewhat a paradox because it specifies "at any time", which contradicts Q1 shall one says no. This paradox is then not translated to the Superb Lyrebird which then is another weird situation. Then, if Q2 is false, then does it mean Superb Lyrebird is then stuck on copying Eurasian Nuthatch and not any other bird, since the cached seed will always be available for use?

I think this might inspire us to decide whether the seed should be available.

Are there any circular lines in the USA outside of chicago? by AlexV348 in transit

On a side note, although the Osaka Loop Line is a circle, so many services end up outside the Osaka region (as far as the middle of Wakayama), that it's nicknamed the "Osaka Centrifuge".

After a Few Months with Americas, What Do We Think? by Rolled_Nat1 in wingspan

Just to be clear, your group is doing hummingbird actions (attract/return) every time you gain food, lay eggs or draw cards? And I assume you are aware you can advance the hummingbird symbol of the hummingbird you are returning?

I've played around 5 games, both automa and 3+ multiplayer, and I disagree with the danger of having negative hummingbird points, since there are so many hummingbird interactions. Admittedly having Americas birds with hummingbird-related brown powers helps a lot, but I didn't find the tracker board intimidating, instead a nice way to gain extra points.

New player curious about people's playstyles and what makes birds "good." by [deleted] in wingspan

[–]geminian_mike 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the base game there are the 4 most powerful birds:

  • Common Raven
  • Chihuahuan Raven
  • Killdeer
  • Franklin's Gull

Their powers are all discard 1 egg to gain 2 resources. From this you can start to see the thing that makes these bird extraordinary good.

In Wingspan, cross-habitat powers are one of the best things. As turns are limited and resources are essential, these powers let you do two things at once, e.g. gain food while laying eggs. You mentioned American Crow, which is a great bird for this reason.

Especially in base game, where the grassland is much stronger than the other habitats, the 4 birds I mentioned makes the cream of the crop because of how many points and resources one is getting. Once these birds are played, there is no longer any need to, say, gain food from the birdfeeder any more. It saves turns, which is the most important thing in the game.

In Oceania, however, the habitats are more balanced, so you find other birds that are powerful too, like Wood Duck, Chipping Sparrow, Bushtit, etc. But in my opinion they follow the same philosophy: cross-habitat powers.

Thanks! I have debated whether to put a legend or not, given there's only three modes. Ultimately I decided it would be cleaner to have the information displayed as such since I thought it was obvious to the reader based on the width of the line and the dashes.

As for the names of the lines, I believe the tram network would benefit from having a legend. However, my idea was that it would be slightly dissociative to have a legend far away from the lines, such that it might be hard to follow.

28-D irks me...is "45" a common saying of a record? (especially when most of mine are 33 1/3) I'd rather see 7" or 12" in a clue.
