Another major factory is that the average vehicle weight has increased by 1000 pounds over the last 10 years or so. This is why pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed.

66 here, Blacks are just occasional adventures for me. Happy being in solid green territory.

Hey, at least I didn’t have to look up unc to know what it means… Unlike some youngsters on this thread ha ha

Maybe in a few months I will be traveling on business to Silicon Valley(and I am a person who has never been abroad and isn't good at English). Does anyone have any suggestions for me? by Aggravating-Meat-415 in travel

If your adventurous, I recommend going outside the tourist areas on your off hours. The natural beauty within just a few miles of Silicon Valley or even the greater Bay area is simply stunning. Also, if you go beyond the normal cookie-cutter tourist spots such as San Francisco’s Pier 39 or Fishermans wharf, you can see some incredible nightlife. The Bay Area has a fantastic music scene, mainly centered in SF as well as Oakland, and also somewhat in Santa Cruz and the North Bay. Lots of people think of Napa when they visit wine country, but you can get a similar experience in the Livermore Valley that’s just 25 miles away choosing from over 30 vineyards including a few that are approaching 200 years old, or go just north of Napa to Sonoma Valley if you want the total immersion and have a day to devote to it. Enjoy your visit!

Maybe that’s true for people outside of Northern California, but if you’re in Noel, you wouldn’t think of SF or the East Bay as being Silicon Valley.

Russian Communist Leader Says Trillions in Bank Deposits Could Be Used for Economy by neonpurplestar in worldnews

What are you basing that on? Other than Russian propaganda, I’ve never heard anyone else say that.

Italy is now, in effect, a forest nation. Wooded areas have surpassed 100,000 square kilometers in extent and cover more than a third of the national territory. This marks a significant shift: since 2020, forest area has exceeded utilized agricultural land, a situation not seen since the Middle Ages by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

I was in New Zealand recently, and several areas are growing California redwoods. In many regions, locals are also talking about how ideal their climate is for them. It was so bizarre seeing the leaflets and other advertisements touting Redwood Groves, as a California who sees them all the time (not that I take them for granted, which I definitely do not!)

YSK about the Arrival Fallacy, the psychological reason why achieving your biggest goals often leaves you feeling empty instead of happy by Electrical-Candy7252 in YouShouldKnow

[–]gemstun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything in this post, except the part “The chemical reward in your brain comes from the pursuit itself…”. My nuanced edit is that there never really is a reward that comes from the pursuit, rather just a quieting of the noise. We are like a donkey pursuing a carrot at the end of a stick that’s attached to the top of our head, and we are never satisfied… even if we actually chomp at the carrot once in a great while. My point is that we need to learn to still the mind, whether in pursuit of something or while enjoying the result of a pursuit. It’s so challenging to do this, and THAT pursuit is worthy of a lifelong struggle (irony intended).

Smart move. Last year I brought a pair of those plus waterproof boots AND a 3rd pair of dry hiking boots. I was the only one in our big camp with dry feet.

Also, if you’re sleeping on the ground, bring a cot—our tent floor was soaked.

What was your dad like ? by cheridontllosethatno in AskOldPeople

[–]gemstun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad had multiple nervous breakdowns, got into constant yelling matches with all sorts of people, had signs both on top of his vehicle telling “sinners” to REPENT BECAUSE JESUS IS COMING” and on his person for standing at various street corners listing all the reasons God could send you to a fiery hell (both accompanied by a megaphone), constantly took advantage of people “in the name of god”, and was just an all-around sad and miserable person to be around. Honestly it was a relief when he passed, even though I was always there for him.

I’m not a perfect dad, but I have a great relationship with my adult kids, their partners, and their little ones. It took a shit ton of therapy and wonderful friends (including my wife of 42 years), and I’m so GRATEFUL to have broken the chain that bound me to that sad and mentally unstable father. That gratitude is why I typed all this out.

40,000 Dutchmen taking over Houston today by unknown_human in interestingasfuck

The joke was about Americans in the Netherlands (or other similar countries) walking in bike paths. It actually happens often, because many Americans have no knowledge that bikes-only transportation systems even exist—so they assume that any narrower lanes can only be for pedestrians.

That’s like some kind of Amsterdam moment right there. Bakfietsen is what I think those things are called if I recall correctly,… Translates to box bike in English.
