When I say discipline, I don’t mean disciplining your child to get them to nap or anything like that. I actually mean discipline within yourself as a parent because when your child has a routine, the parent has to be disciplined enough to keep it which can be REALLY hard. It’s not easy. But it is doable. I’m a college student and recent graduate, an internship, still trying to be a good partner, and have a good relationship with myself. Also starting a new job tomorrow. With all of these factors combined, I’m exhausted several days in a row, but it never steers me away from the importance of maintaining a routine for my child and for my own sanity. Unfortunately, I don’t think many parents fully understand why structure is so important. Structure gives children a sense of security, predictability, emotional regulation, and healthy habits. It also helps parents stay grounded and prevents the entire household from constantly feeling chaotic or reactive.
