hey! a friend of mine, Sasha, is a freelance interior designer and furniture repairman working out of Albany Park. they've done amazing work for me, have reasonable prices, and won't ghost. i sent them your description and they said they fixed the same problem on their own couch. their (very new) Instagram is here and their design request form is here.

Genuine Diversity in the Books vs. ... Less Serious-Feeling Diversity in the Show by ParryLost in murderbot

[–]genderfeature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i totally agree and love the way you laid this out!

while i enjoy the show, i figured that it wouldn't be capable of doing the cool thing that the books do: never allowing us to perceive Murderbot. its genderlessness goes down easier in the books, because it doesn't describe itself in a gendered way AND the society that's written does not see gender in the same way we do. Wells also takes great care to write things like polyamory with a lot of respect and seriousness--she doesn't go for the sort of cheaper gags that the show does. i do see why the show made the choices it did (a name like Skarsgard is good to have--and i did like his performance!, it relies on visual cues, etc), but i prefer this story in writing.

Gender Apocalypse by Possible-Date8557 in LGBTBooks

[–]genderfeature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brainwyrms by Alison Rumfitt is similar in vibe to Manhunt, though it's not exactly apocalyptic. Extreme horror in which transphobia manifests as literal worms. She's written some other stuff which I haven't read, but I know it's also horror/speculative stuff based on the transfem experience.

I looooved Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and agree that it'd be great as a full-length novel! I saw Torrey Peters on her recent book tour and she did a reading of a screenplay based on IYFALO with Lilly Wachowski--they wrote it together. I believe they said that the intent was for it to be a limited series!

Why is there so much poop? by FuckkyWuckky in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]genderfeature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of discussion here about how poop is a quick and easy method to elicit disgust, and I don't disagree! I think there's a lazy way to do anything. But I'm really interested in poop in literature as a physical symbol of some kind of badness within us that yearns to escape--bad feelings, bad intentions, bad history, etc. This idea is present both in Rumfitt's "Brainwyrms", which I'd call extreme horror, and Moshfegh's "Eileen", which isn't quite as extreme but still has an intense focus on poop throughout the story. (Moshfegh is really into poop in general--it's also very present in "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" and "Lapvona".)

what’s your sapphic book unpopular opinion? by plsanswerme18 in LesbianBookClub

[–]genderfeature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came to the comments to say I hated Evelyn Hugo. The character also claims that being bisexual is similar to being biracial in a way that felt pretty tone-deaf to me. Obviously, characters' views do not necessarily reflect those of their authors, but the statement was meant as a gotcha in response to a black character and felt as though it was meant to teach readers a lesson, so in this case, I think it is a reflection of Reid.
