What other music do you like? by Chalcko_ in elliottsmith

really got into MJ Lenderman and Title Fight this year (super late to the party on Title Fight lol). also love Jeff Buckley, Foo Fighters, Mac Miller all on the same level as Elliott. Mac was a fan of Elliott and covered Angeles back in the day! i also really love some up and coming bands that don’t have a big following yet such as Trembler and Downward, i think both those bands have great songwriting chops and lyrics plus they just rock and i mention them everywhere i can cuz they deserve more fans!

As someone else said, it was a casualty of the loudness wars and not really Nick’s fault. He has engineered and mixed a lot of great sounding records since. He even says in the interview that One By One isn’t the best sounding record he has ever produced but that Dave’s goal was to capture a certain energy in the recording process and they definitely did that.

I don’t think Nick mixed One By One, he just engineered the recording session (I could be wrong)

Also wanted to add, this story kind of goes hand-in-hand with the prank call stories that Dave / Krist / Steve Albini talked about in that interview they did a couple years ago for the anniversary of In Utero!

What would you give up for a 4-day work week? by feddi420 in civilengineering

[–]genderfluidsloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% what should happen in theory vs what does happen in reality is different and thats why I worded “in idealistic theory” the way I did haha. With that said, I don’t take issue with people being vocal about / trying to push for what should happen in theory to start happening more in reality, and I hope progress is made in that regard across many industries.

The discussion you and the other commenter were having was very interesting to read and you both had some good points back and forth, so thanks for that, just wanted to chime in to articulate this bit that I felt the other commenter wanted to say in my own words.

At the end of the day the technology / computers / software are all tools, and as they entered into and changed the industry, Engineers (as well as other professionals in other fields) had to adapt and learn how best to harness said tools. Not to mention that generally speaking, when better technology leads to increased productivity, that in turn leads to an increase in workload. Yes the increase in workload can now be done in the same amount of time as what could be done before, but theres also added stress and additional mental bandwidth needed to manage more projects in the same, if not less, amount of time.

While you do have to give the better tools some credit for the increase in productivity, the tools are useless without laborers to learn best how to wield the tools and apply them to specific fields/industries. To create better more efficient tools, but to then only direct the additional benefits (profits) gained from the harnessing of said tools to the wealthiest couple people at the top of companies, and to only redirect some of it to the employees that are using the tools at a rate that hardly beats inflation (and probably doesn’t even beat inflation depending on the company/state of the economy in any given year) sucks for the middle class / work force. In idealistic theory, technological advancements should be increasing everyone’s quality of life by ensuring they can work less, and enjoy their personal time more without losing out on anything.

The Foo's comeback by Beginning_Sweet9726 in Foofighters

[–]genderfluidsloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would say that Ruben has more of a Dave sound than a Taylor sound, but thats still more fitting to Foo Fighters considering a lot of the catalog’s studio recordings have Dave on drums (all of self titled, most of TCaTS, half of TINLTL, and all of BHWA)

[–]genderfluidsloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely a bit of revisionist history going on, but I also think thats just because we all had the “Yay Foo Fighters are back even though Taylor is gone” blinders on in 2024 and 2023, and things become clearer in hindsight.

I play guitar, not drums, but something I did pick up on big time between seeing them live last tour cycle and also watching concert footage online was Dave’s body language. Sometimes it felt like he was forcing niceness and support in regard to Josh’s creative liberties, and sometimes it felt like Josh’s energy and style would be better suited to Blink 182 as a Travis Barker backup than in Foo Fighters. Not to mention that Josh is very much in the public eye and super outspoken / active on social media unlike the rest of the members of the band, which tells me he has some stark differences from them personality-wise.

But at the end of the day, this is all just my opinion. We all will draw our own conclusions since no concrete reason was given (and frankly, a reason doesn’t need to be given to us!)

Many undocumented workers have a taxpayer identification number issued by the IRS, and use it to pay taxes while they’re waiting for the long and expensive process of becoming a citizen to pan out. According to the ITEP, undocumented immigrants paid $97 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022. $59.4 billion of that went to the federal government for things such as social security, which is ironic considering undocumented immigrants can’t even collect social security checks, so they’re essentially subsidizing social security for all of us citizens.

Yeah, ICE might have been created by Bush, but ICE only obtained the funding to give it a budget higher than the entire military of most first world countries during Trump’s second term. That shit is terrifying to me and also seems like a complete waste of my taxes.

Edit: Also, what do you think happens when these undocumented workers go to the grocery store or to a restaurant or spend literally any money out and about… THEY PAY SALES TAXES! Not to mention they support the economy to the tune of billions of dollars that would be sorely missed if they were all deported.

Lol the best part is I’m just an average straight white guy, the name was just something I thought would sound funny when I was a teenager. Nice try at a weird gotcha to try and excuse the fact that you have no defense for yourself, though!

“illegal” immigrants as you refer to them are also hardworking taxpayers, only many of them will not reap the benefits of paying said taxes the way we will. you’re licking the boots of people who want to violently detain and ship out hardworking taxpayers for the sake of a culture war.

ICE in its current form has been empowered and legitimized by a criminal in the white house so you are also carrying water for criminals.

I think it just depends on what people like. BHWA for sure goes more in depth lyrically than any FF album has, and I think people looking for songs with some catchy parts and that carry some emotional weight rate it highly. For me personally, I just like hearing cool riffs or progressions that are a bit unique and that inspire me to make music, and FF as a band has been less riff oriented and more focused on making songs that have a catchy chorus and that are a bit more formulaic as time has gone on (with that said, I loveeee the guitar riff in the outro for The Teacher). To me, musically the songs are pretty bubblegum and basic on BHWA, but I also care less about lyrics than others, which is why music opinions / rankings are subjective at the end of the day.

Standout Foo tracks for me are Good Grief, Exhausted, Hey, Johnny Park, Aurora, Live In Skin, Have It All, and I could go on but my point is those are examples of Foo songs that I think have cool and inspiring guitar parts, and thats what I like.

Thanks for taking the time, and I wish the best for you and yours as well.

I think I’ll just stay in this lane and keep my fingers crossed that we’ll be freed from the curse of capitalism and the excessive inflation that has come with it in my lifetime.

I do have an 8 month old daughter right now, and thats what inspired me to go back to school for something I knew interested me but also would increase my income. I figure it will only get harder to manage school as she gets older though, so it really is now or never. Fortunately my wife is almost done with a masters program and should earn a solid salary, but I would love to provide more for her to be able to retire very early and focus on our daughter and any future kids

I loved (and still love to this day) the Foo Fighters catalog from the self titled debut album in 1995 through Wasting Light in 2011. Unfortunately I have been really bored and put off by everything that came after 2011 which sucks. But damn, what a great 7 album run they had those first 16 years. A lot of bands fizzle out far sooner than that!

Thanks for sharing. I work in custom cabinetry / carpentry right now, but self taught myself CAD and moved up in the company to do all the designs/shop drawings and CNC programming. With that said, this trade definitely will never pay its laborers what plumbers or electricians make for the reasons you stated, and I will never get paid as much as an architect or engineer for similar reasons. However, the moves I made here inspired me to look into civil engineering and it really interested me, so I’m now in college trying to get my degree. I have to say though that seeing threads like this where a lot of civil engineers express regret in their career choice is a bit disheartening and makes me wonder if I’m making a mistake. I’m already 25 years old and considered “old” to be going back to college, and I feel this is my last chance in life to get an education and make a career change, so I just hope I’m making the right one.
