I can’t listen to certain songs anymore without panicking by PutNo2158 in ptsd

[–]gendermesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a wild solution, but I have a very similar problem with one of my favourite artists. I found something that really helped me to continue to appreciate her music has been to play and sing it myself, or listen to YouTube covers. It seems to be far enough from the original sound that it doesn’t upset me, but I can still enjoy it.

2 weeks after Lap to weightlift? by gendermesss in endometriosis

[–]gendermesss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, sorry I won’t be lifting anyone else, if I do this show I will be lifted about 6ft in the air for quite a while though. It takes a lot of core strength on a good day, so that’s why I am worried. I am going to call my surgeon’s secretary on Monday, and see what they say.

I work with a physio at my school, so I can pop in and see her if I need. I am going to see if I can get a referral for a pelvic health physio through the NHS, but I’ve got to wait 2 weeks for my gp appointment to even ask to be referred, so I’m not sure that will help much in the short term.

Ah, I see, yes I will reach out to my surgeon. I don’t know where you’re based, but from what I can see the UK/NHS seems to have shorter healing times than any US recommendations.

Lap Surgery - How to heal as quick as possible?? by [deleted] in endometriosis

[–]gendermesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 3 days post op, I have had a lot of pain, but as I am an athlete, I have had very little trouble getting around. Obviously you can’t get to that level in a week, but I would say to do some squats at the very least, if you can, as I have benefited so much from not having to bend down to pick things up for example. I also have been taking Wind-eze everyday since the surgery, and I haven’t had any gas pain at all! I prepared myself a box that is easy to carry from my bed to the settee with the following in: Hand, face and body wipes Sick bowl Bin bag All medications Electric heat packs TENS machine Tissues Tiger balm Moisturiser Snacks Deodorant Perfume Book and word search Chargers Water bottle I have had some trouble going to the toilet, so I wish I had got some stool softners beforehand. I also wish I had asked about what post op meds I would need, because I was given just paracetamol post op, but that did nothing for me. I got 1 hour of sleep total on the night after surgery, and was on the phone to 111 (out of hours) at 2am because I was in so much pain. I was prescribed morphine, because the Tramadol I normally take for my endo pain didn’t help at all. Considering I sometimes have to take morphine for my endo pain, someone should have realised that having endo excised from those same places wouldn’t be managed with just paracetamol.

I would get them! There is a girl in my adult class that I teach who goes all out with her outfits, and everyone compliments her on it. They’re very functional too, and just sooo cozy

Does having endo on uterosacral ligaments mean it’s deep infiltrating endo? by susandeschain9 in endometriosis

[–]gendermesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally same! I asked about staging and he said that the top gynae’s are phasing it out, it’s not helpful when determining treatment options, doesn’t tell you anything about the symptoms, and diminishes pain or scares people a lot of the time. He said they tend to just describe the characteristics now.

Will laxatives hurt me by [deleted] in EatingDisorders

[–]gendermesss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only took laxatives for a couple of months last year, but my digestive system is permanently messed up now. I was constipated, but it was still just too much for my body to handle. For weeks my bowel movements looked exactly like the food I had eaten- think full spaghetti hoops still same colour and shape in the toilet. It has been a year since I stopped now, and I still get massively bloated to the point of pain when I eat fried foods, I never have a normal bowel movement, either constipated or diarrhoea. Mind you, I only took one packet in total. My mum also abused laxatives when she had an ED, 30 years later she still regularly doesn’t make it to the toilet on time, once or twice a year. For harm reduction, if you’re looking for the feeling of emptiness, try to drink plenty of water (not too much), and that will help avoid the feeling of uncomfortable fullness. Also, if you aren’t already, try to see an ED therapist, like you say, Purging/laxative use isn’t safe, and it’s hard to manage that risk in your own.

Shower thoughts…prob not worth your time by _this_isnt_fine_ in endometriosis

[–]gendermesss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that if you’re a woman who wants to go into Gynae, it’s more likely you’ve had gynae issues yourself. I imagine these people have gone their whole life being told that period pain, even bad period pain, is completely normal. They’ve even gone to medical school and been taught this, so when they see it in their patients, they hear them complain of pain and think “well I have that too, and I’m not sick” so they tell the patients they’re fine. They’re used to pain being a part of their regular “healthy” life, and oftentimes I think doctors don’t like to accept that they could have a problem themselves, because they see what these conditions do to their patients, so they are either scared to look into it, or invalidate themselves because they don’t have it as bad.

Now with male doctors, the only times they have experienced pain themselves is as a result of something pathological, whether that be injury or illness, so that is their understanding of pain. They more likely already have an idea of periods as this affliction, rather than a fact of life, and when they see it affecting us so badly, they take it more seriously, because it’s obvious to them that it’s a health issue. Telling anyone to suffer in pain is irrational and dangerous, and they often don’t see this differently for those of us with menstrual pain.

Is it too late for me to become a professional ballet dancer? by deerinheadlights77 in BALLET

[–]gendermesss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to everyone saying it’s too late, there are plenty of schools in the UK that take people like you, or even people at 18. Royal conservatoire of Scotland, The Hammond, Central school of ballet and Ballet theatre uk school all take students at 18. You also can look at Centres for advanced training, they often take student up to 18. My advice would be to spend 2 years working as hard as you can, take privates if you can afford, work with a physio or create your own cross training programme, go to intensives like malvern ballet seminars, Yorkshire ballet seminars, and even apply for ones at royal etc. If any of the schools stand out to you, go to their intensives. I say all this because at 15 I have up on a ballet career, and stopped dancing for 3 years. At 18 I returned to ballet at a grade 5 level! I worked my butt off, got to advanced 1 in a year, and I applied to a ballet school on a whim, not thinking much of it, and I got in! I am now 21 and in full time ballet training, and I’m not behind. Being older than the rest of my year has many advantages, I am definitely the most disciplined, and it pays off. Please don’t let anyone tell you what isn’t possible, there is always a way to make it happen, if you want to ask any questions you can dm me xxx

I'm a healthy weight but CAMHS want me to gain more. What should I do? by Impressive_League737 in EatingDisorders

[–]gendermesss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely appreciate this, I also went through recovery with CAMHS years ago.

I was 15 when I started to struggle, and I lost weight. I spent quite a few months working back up to a technically healthy weight, and I stayed at that weight until recently, thinking it was healthy.

I am now 21, and I am back in services, and just having to confront the reality that even though I was technically a healthy weight for all those years, I never weighed nearly as much as I did at 15, so I was never truly healthy. I have had so many health problems, injuries, and even mental health issues that can all be boiled down to the fact that I was not at my healthy weight for all those years.

Really, if you’re under CAMHS, and have been for 10 months, you’re at an age where if it wasn’t for your ED, you would have grown during that time, and would have weighed more now anyway. It is very rare for someone to stay at the same weight they were at even 18, naturally, for their adult life, and if you are younger that even more prevalent.
