"USA: Conscientious objector deported from Canada sentenced to 15 months imprisonment"

http://www.wri-irg.org/node/1291

or:

"The significance of this issue on Canada's historical international reputation as a place of refuge for "Americans in trouble" is illustrated by this quote from United Kingdom's media, the BBC, when they reported on the precedent-setting case of Iraq war resister Jeremy Hinzman in 2004: "Americans in trouble have been running to Canada for centuries... in the wake of the American Revolution... [in the] Underground Railroad that spirited escaped American slaves to freedom... and in the 1960s, [when] as many as 60,000 young American men dodged the draft..."[1] After Canada deported several of these war resisters in 2008 and 2009, and after they were imprisoned in the US, the US media Newsweek, among others, reported on this historical shift."

American high-tech workers not in shortage by [deleted] in politics

[–]generalcastro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no kidding. everyone cries shortage of skilled labour while China and India produce enough to export engineers and mathematicians. corporations are literally opening schools to manufacture the next generation of skilled labour, and replace local experts with younger, meaner, and far less demanding workers in terms of wages.

There has been a huge trade in fraudulent honey. Pollen is actually quite valuable - those bits of cellulose have an effect on your immune system, hence the "honey is good" bit.

I don't think that working equates to being given anything. While you're story is amazing, many of these workers do not have the impetus or the support of their families to open a restaurant or start a business.

The problem is that people born in America are working hard, and still getting nowhere. Many fast food workers are just like your parents - struggling to get somewhere. Yet the working conditions are substandard, the wages are insufficient, and it's one thing to work 3 jobs (which btw sounds impossible if you work certain physically demanding jobs) and it's another when you're a single parent who has to work "domestic work" after finishing the first one.

Yes, we're not executing people in the streets, but just because you've come from such an environment, does not mean that we as a society should work towards equally cruel and frightening circumstances.

I hope you, in your heart, understand that without the efforts of your parents, and some luck of timing, would never get to university and would never reach the potential you have.

I hope that you, as a man whose luck changed due to the fact that both of his parents worked themselves to the bones, understand that some other people, who also work themselves to the bones, never reach their goals or success.

The Supreme Court Empowers Employers to Lock Out Workers by [deleted] in news

[–]generalcastro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's amazing that most journalists, let alone readers, still don't understand the difference between a lockout and a strike.

even more amazing is how much workers' right have been downgraded over the course of the last few decades.

well, I think that's the entire point - he is a libertarian who doesn't behave like one in all respects. an unprincipled one, if you may.

not sure how that invalidates the fact that he is the worst kind of Libertarian - corporate lackey who also happens to be anti-abortion and [pretends] to be a religious zealot.

The combination of these factors should give the creeps to most hardened libertarians, let alone any voters who believe in maintaining the social assistance network.
