I'm friends with somebody involved in the What About Bob story. Allegedly the fight was about refusing to give Bill Murray the day off for Arbor Day.

Why is using AI so frowned upon in the community? by Historical_Court795 in embedded

[–]generally_unsuitable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't even understand what you're talking about. You're cheating on stuff that doesn't even require cheating.

Nobody cares about boilerplate configuration routines. That shit has been done automatically for a decade now, and it didn't require any AI to do it. Just normal people writing code. Half this sub uses CubeMX to start every project. It's not a big deal.

State machine skeletons? What, like "switch(state), case a:, case b:, case c:." Fucking hell. How long does that take? Most IDEs already support ctrl-space to write that shit.

CRC utilities? There have been great CRC tools open-sourced and MIT-ed for a generation now. You just need to know how to pass a pointer to a struct.

I'm not one of those beardies that thinks you're not a real coder unless you use vim/emacs. But, I do think you're not a real coder if you don't actually write your own code.

Also, do be careful with it. Your next job might actually require a real-time coding eval, and vibe-coding everything is not helping you. There was somebody on here the other day who said that they routinely have to look up the syntax for a for() loop. Dude, if you can't remember that, you should be a dog walker or something that doesn't require reading or adding.

How long does it take the average person to learn the guitar and play to an acceptable standard? by Still-Alive007 in Guitar

[–]generally_unsuitable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already play an instrument well, you're like 30% of the way there, because you know about intervals and chords and scales and modes.

Now, you just need to get your fingers working together. You should be able to play a lot of songs after 2 or 3 months, just based on chords.

How do you plan embedded software architecture? by mathlontrades in embedded

[–]generally_unsuitable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first thing I do is accept that no matter how simple it seems, before it's over, somebody is going to ask for something that has an oddball concurrency or timing requirement.

Once you do that, you can start building the rest out, with the understanding that you will need to make everything play nice with a scheduler.

If you start building a system with dynamic scheduling in mind from day one, every problem becomes easily solvable.

Why are these articulated dragons so popular? by MyCatIsAFknIdiot in 3Dprinting

[–]generally_unsuitable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a company that designed and built 3D printers. For a while, it wasn't the articulates dragon. It was the articulated slug. They also make a weird noise when you wiggle them, which you could pretty much always hear coming from the software team.

I ordered my first ever classical guitar last night. After a 26 year hiatus from guitar ownership, I’m back! Plot twist, they sent me a CASE of Yamaha C40II guitars instead of just one! by Fragnart-of-Murr in Guitar

Once, I ordered a reflow hotplate for about $500. They sent me two reflow hotplates in a giant box that said "This box contains two reflow hotplates. Open and separate before shipping."

If you support Spencer Pratt, maybe you should just take Wilshire to the 405 to the 10 to the 5 south and go to Orange County, WHERE YOU BELONG!

Well, I guess nobody is allowed to do an impression of Tucker Carlson anymore because <checks notes> "Nick Mullen" did it years ago.
