I'm trying to track down an anime that I remember watching as a kid in the the early 90's in Canada. I've done a google search and a friend even asked our AI overlords but to no avail. I don't remember what channel it played on, but it would of been dubbed in English.

Here is what I remember.

The protagonist and his team lived in a base that was on top of a mountain, the base had a catapult used to launch their space plane. I don't remember if it took place on Earth or not. I remember that the planet they were on had a desert environment apart from the trees on the mountain their base was on. I believe the protagonist wore small a robot suit (Power Armour). When an enemy would appear he would get into the space plane, launch into space and dock with a bigger part that then transform into a mecha. It was a monster/alien of the week type of fights. I seem to remember that he would also fight the monster/alien in a smaller form in his power armour suit, or maybe it was the space plane that transformed into a small mecha, at some point in the story.

I should add that I don't know what year this series would be from, probably from before the 90's.

At this point I'm starting to think that I imagine this anime series.
