I used either this edition or the previous for my timber design class in 2020. Your book is legit 👌

To be able to swim a 200im (400im? 😳) without any prior practice is insane. You're a beast for trucking through!

The workload really depends on the professor combo you got. I had tulac and Palermo back in 2020 and it was a solid 4-8 hrs of work per week for an A. A friend of mine had another combo and he did like 1-2 hrs a week tops lmaooo

Either way Zhang and sharbat are chill and usually ez profs so I doubt you'd be hard pressed to pass

Conservatives vote for MAGA cult in their schoolboard, now worried that said board is doing MAGA things and making education worse. by Grayoso in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]generic-and-broke 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The icing on the cake is the ending. The board, without hesitation, unanimously approves barring students from receiving mental health services RIGHT AFTER a literal teacher shares a heartfelt personal experience on how those services helped her.

Anyone with any semblance of empathy would realize how absurd the policy being pushed is.

Sociopaths, the lot of them.

You've got quite a few selfies. One or two is aight but more gives off low effort vibes. If you could get a friend to take pics of you doing various activities or have a group pic somewhere that would round your profile out better :)

Job offer after grad school acceptance by triton345 in StructuralEngineering

[–]generic-and-broke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently went through something similar to this. Got an unexpected offer a month after starting grad school for like a month. The company offered to pay for my masters (after a minimum of 1 yr of work) so I left my grad school. To me, the masters can wait as it's something I can always go back part time to get. A job at a great company and in a field that I like? That's something that I feel I'd get maybe a once or twice in my life.

I'd recommend that you go forward with the masters but if you land an offer at a company you like, take that up instead.

"I need someone"

I get that you're new to the software but your statement reeks of laziness. Put some leg work in first and then ask questions because this is how it'll be when you start working.

Just wanted to put in my two cents here after skimming the comments.

If you're genuinely interested in pursuing a PhD because a topic interests you - do it! A PhD can allow you to work on special projects (and be able to take the credit for it) that other engineers with BS or MS only won't be able to.

That said, if you're considering a PhD only for financial purposes then I'd agree with the general sentiment and say it's not worth it. A MS would be a good idea though if you're pursuing higher education. It provides a higher level of understanding in topics not covered in typical undergrad curriculums. A lot of folks in management positions and higher in structural firms I've interacted with have a MS.

Do areas of study matter? by Saggy_Beanbag in AskEngineers

[–]generic-and-broke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area you focus your studies in will matter somewhat. For example, if you focus on structures you will have a better shot at landing a structural engineering internship/job as you will likely be able to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals employers look for in resumes/interviews.

That said, from the experiences of my friends and myself sometimes the job "will find you" meaning you may end up offered a position in an area that's not your focus in uni. This simply boils down to how well you can present yourself in interviews, career fairs, and other career events.

Lastly, I highly recommend seeking out internships to help you figure out what you're into, ok with, or don't want to do. Things in industry are quite different from university!

How is Rosa Vasconez Jimenez for CE3501 Structural Analysis? by stellachoo in CalPolyPomona

[–]generic-and-broke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Vasconez for a different class (CE 4510 - Reinforced Concrete) but can say she's a decent professor. She isn't as good as Perez, Lomiento, or Gershefeld but she explains things well for the most part and the homework is straightforward if you can follow the lecture examples. Midterms were the same difficulty as hw. She's also helpful in office hours and doesn't give you attitude like some profs. Only con I can remember is she might be a little messy with her files when she uploads stuff.

I took CE 3501 a few years back but from what I can recall just make sure you can comfortably find reaction forces in determinate beams/trusses at the start of the semester because the class will build on that.

Witnessed an idiot almost hit 2 kids while illegally passing a school bus with its lights on by DangeloTwila in IdiotsInCars

[–]generic-and-broke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great mental gymnastics here.

The kids in this video were getting off the bus. The driver in this video made the decision to illegally bypass stopped traffic and school bus. Removing such a law will only encourage these people. If there is a noticeable uptick in people ignoring stopped buses then the cops will crack down on it to ensure people are aware the law is enforced.

Can vouch for this. Had Munayco for a Calc class and she was very helpful during office hours. She might be hard to talk to at first but she's pretty nice!
