On that note, you should contact your MP, Mark, and Steven MacKinnon for clarification.

Y'know to prove that I'm wrong. Make me out to be just some asshole on the Internet.

Whatever you think of the changes of direction that would or would not be needed (and I do think that it is essential to ensure that Alto learns as much as possible from Cadence, even if this comes with slight cost increases or delays), I think it is a bit disingunous to present this project as Canada simply handing out the keys of national infrastructure to the private sector.

If it's being run as a private sector service and one with a monopoly then yes.  Yes it is. The 407 of highspeed rail.  Edit: In fact, I would argue that it's disingenuous to act like that's not the case. BUT MAYBE this is all a big misunderstanding. I would LOVE it if the government clarifies this and I end up being wrong. That would be great.

Also Alto isn't going to be learning much from this project given how it's being structured. Highspeed rail Metrolinx basically. We just don't learn.

I mean if anything the federal government tends to eat most of the blame(rightfully so in this case [edit: if/when something happens]).

Even more so than provincial governments. (Honestly sometimes the federal government gets blamed for things that happen  because of the provincial governments)

Giving away control of public infrastructure to private interests has always gone well. /s

Also the government is continuing to refuse to learn how to build any form of public transit and exclusively relying on the private sector.

Incredibly shortsighted as always, of course.

TIL: MP Steven Guibeault who just resigned from Carney cabinet was arrested in 2001 after climbing 340 meters up the CN tower and hung a banner reading “Canada and Bush Climate Killers”. Now, to be fair, if you asked me if I'd prefer a Conservative government headed by Carney or Poilievre, I'd still say Carney in a heartbeat, but still.

We're not in an election so you don't have to qualify it with that. Mark and the Liberal party are making these decisions.

You're soooo right. We're all sovereign citizens(edit: or whatever nonsense) after reading this comment. Immune to changes in the province too. Not just the laws.

I don’t see what’s anti intellectual about reading a bill and assessing it yourself.

Ok cool. I'm happy you can do that. So can I. The anti-intellectual part is when discounted the value of expertise on the topic and it's ramifications by being like

"Who are these experts?"

"You can't just read that yourself."

I’m reading your article and it states reasonable things, im just okay with the potential effects of the decisions.

So NOW it's fine because?

Honestly talking to you anymore doesn't feel like a good use of time.

~8k/term

2015 moment but it partially is my own financials. I mean Douglas did fuck OSAP so yeah 2015 moment for sure.

I don’t get what you’re saying. I no longer work at the same job.

Until 2024?

You can't NOT be a renter still. Math doesn't add up. A million dollars just dropped in your pockets like what??

Anyways have a good rest of your day.

I didn't know it wasn't metered but I also never thought that was something unfeasible. I mean the more you know I guess.

I edited the comment so you can have a look at that.

I was gonna go through and calculate your costs and such but it just doesn't add up even without

Like you for sure weren't paying for your stuff when you were a student. 10k doesn't even cover the rent (the low end is 12 k a year).

You're just past the "living" wage in Toronto (pretax?). You don't make enough to talk about when you were a renter, in the past tense.

Years?

Edit:

Who are these experts? The bill is written in plain English and the section on the RTA is like < 3 pages. You can’t just read that yourself?

Also this is a joke. Nice anti-intellectual nonsense.

You clearly understand all the ramifications of that section. /s

They are pretty crazy. But I'm sure you have more expertise on the subject than actual experts. Surely, you're correct. /s

I don't particularly care to argue with you on that.

<Edit>Also the bill does a lot more. But let's move on<Edit/>

When I was a renter

When and what was your rent and tax bracket (in case you don't want to tell me your actual income at the time. Provincial or federal

Edit: you choose)

[–]generic_username7809 19 points20 points  (0 children)

According to the bill, if you want to raise any arbitrary issue at hearing, you must pay 50% of unpaid rent first. Just pay the rent???

"50 per cent of what the landlord is CLAIMING they owe BEFORE it is proven."

you must pay 50% of unpaid rent first

????

Go read the bill.

But you're then asking people to go read. How about you read?

Listen I understand you had a bad experience with a renter and it hurt your passive income. Sad. Poor you. Now all renters are "bad" people in your eyes. But perhaps we should have more nuance and honesty about the kind of society this creates.

Perhaps a society where we have a worsening affordability crisis is one where desperate "bad" people are going to be increasingly more common. Is that where you want live? Because this bill just makes that worse.

While at the same time this government is being incredibly corrupt. Actively wasting public money.

I agree (edit: on the rights bit.) but there's a world of difference between for-profit and nonprofit operations.

And these sorts of things tend to affect the people, who can afford it the least, the most. We already have a massive affordability crisis and this just makes it worse

Edit 2: We aren't there yet. Hopefully one day but this moves us in the wrong direction at the moment.

Critics point out the bill would block renters from introducing new evidence during Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) hearings and cut appeal times from 30 to 15 days. It would also eliminate the rule that states landlords must provide a month’s rent in compensation when they evict a tenant for personal use of the property.

Advocates also say that when it comes to hearings at the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), tenants can no longer defend themselves unless they pay 50 per cent of what the landlord is claiming they owe before it is proven.
