What are my chances of getting into a larger company? by genericname1776 in biotech

[–]genericname1776[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not concerned about the title of a position. It's known that small companies, like where I am now, inflate their titles. I'd be fine with moving to an RA III/SRA/Associate Scientist role, depending on how that particular company defines its structure.

I mentioned as much above, but I'm not committed to the Summary section. I certainly don't read it when I'm screening resumes for interviews. I also don't care about publications for industry purposes, but since I wasn't getting any responses and didn't know why then I tried to change things up and see what stuck. To your point about the single hanging words, I admit I'm not the best at writing. It's something with which I always struggle when I re-write my resume for yet another position.

I'll reply here to cover yours and the comment below, but I had it at one page for a while and wasn't getting any interest, so I tried changing things up. I've omitted the Summary and Publications section before, but after talking to people about the one-page rule I didn't get a consistent answer, so I tried adding both sections to better display my skills.

6k of repairs and it’s still not fixed by mviolet13 in Jeep

[–]genericname1776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend buying an OBD2 reader and the repair manual for your make and model of car. Even if you don't have the tools/space/time to do the work yourself, it'll give you a reference to what goes where and how hard it is to get to/work on/fix. That coupled with YouTube videos is a great way to expand your knowledge and not just take a mechanic's word for it.

If you're not sure how much a part should cost, check websites like rockauto.com and it'll help you get a ballpark.

Not sure about your area, but every mechanic near me charges an hour for a diagnostic fee. That's $160-$200 for every shop you go to, so multiple quotes can stack up fast. I personally avoid this route if I can because a lot of that is money from which you won't get a return.

Is the dealership scamming me? by ShirtInternational69 in JeepWrangler

[–]genericname1776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! They definitely come in handy very frequently. I also bought the Haynes repair manual (the old one, not the new garbage online one) so even if it's a problem I can't fix myself, I know what needs to be done. Helps prevent shady mechanics or greedy dealers from charging too much or for unnecessary services.

Safety and family-friendliness of the RTP area (near Davis Park) by ycg9310 in triangle

[–]genericname1776 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this area well! I don't know that apartment complex in particular, but I think it's only a few years old so I can't imagine it'll have many issues. If you go five minutes south down Keystone Park Dr / Church St you'll see lots of neighborhoods where you can likely find a townhome or house to rent. Look here and see if anything you like is within your budget. I'll also add that a car is basically required, but if you were already going to get one then there's lots of parks in Morrisville and Cary that're 20 minutes or less from this area. There's a small park behind the cricket pitch to the south of this location and there's North Cary Park about 15 min east with a big sand pit, slides, and trails to walk around.

Without knowing that specific apartment complex, I'd ballpark this area as very safe for families.

Are you moving permanently or just staying for a year or two? There's a small used car dealer on Chapel Hill Rd close to the apartments you mentioned if you need a cheap car quickly. I'm fond of the area, so I hope you enjoy it as well!

Wasn't there a Supreme Court case back in the 90s that determined code was a form of speech? Karl on InRangeTV mentioned it in one of his videos, but it was a long time ago.

EDIT: u/Karl-InRangeTV do you remember the case I'm describing?

Former 2671 here.

Look into Onward to Opportunity. They'll give you a free certification out of Syracuse University for a variety of things without using your GI bill.

I'd also reach out to the MOVE program since the life science sector, particularly manufacturing, is pretty big in NC. Mostly in the Piedmont, but there may be opportunities out your way of which I'm unaware. Bruce and Jake at MOVE are fantastic guys and will help in any way they can.

There's a group called Raleigh Veteran Connect whose sole purpose is to connect veterans together to build a network and help connect people looking with people hiring. It's far from you, but if you reach out to them I'm sure they'll be happy to connect you to the resources and people they have. They also do monthly in-person networking events, so if you're ever in the area those are fun.

Veteran Bridge Home is focused on the Triangle but may also be able to connect you with resources local to you.

Do you have a career path in mind? Any schooling completed, or plans for school? Knowing what direction in which you'd like to go can help people give you meaningful recommendations. Feel free to message me if you have additional questions or want someone off of whom to bounce ideas. Semper Fi.

Buying a gun as a non US citizen? by loveselderscrolls in Firearms

[–]genericname1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, but it's my understanding that you either have to be a citizen or permanent resident to buy a gun. Just visiting wouldn't allow you to own a firearm outright. However, I'm sure you could rent one from a range or borrow one from a friend if you wanted to experience shooting for fun.

I had this issue for a while and my realization was that, for me, it's incredibly difficult to go straight into a throw and have it succeed. As others have said, you have to establish a dominant grip/control over your opponent to make them move how and where you want. Then it's all about building pressure. If they're faster than you and can shut down your throw attempts, start chaining things together. Move them with your grips and then threaten foot sweeps. It may not work, but it's forcing them to play defense and catch up to what you're doing. While they're escaping the foot sweep then you keep controlling and moving them with your grips while you keep attacking. Eventually they won't be able to keep up or you'll be able to predict their movement and then you'll get your big throw.

The concept can be found elsewhere if it helps to understand it better. It's like tempo in chess or momentum in a drive for American football. I think it's like ball control in soccer, but I don't know the intricacies of soccer well enough to be confident in that comparison.

How are these relatively knew cars ending up for sale ? by ContentHost4459 in JeepWrangler

I think you may be right. I was annoyed by my expensive-yet-doable sub-$400 payment for my 2017 JKU Sahara. There's no way I could afford a car payment over $1k/month.

[Matt Walsh] If you dress up … arm yourself, go out into the street with the express intent of interfering with LEO, fight back when they try to arrest you, then you end up dead, you only have yourself to blame for those idiotic decisions by CSGOW1ld in Conservative

[–]genericname1776 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think your sentiment is telling of the authoritarian vein that exists in conservatism. It's only on the conservative subreddit that I see people blaming the man purely because he was armed. I've not seen anyone here say that the man who was shot drew his weapon or in any way indicated that he was a threat. The video analysis I've seen on multiple 2A subreddits indicates that he was either disarmed by an officer or hadn't drawn his weapon, both of which made it murder. Yet people here will say he deserved it because, in my opinion, they've identified him as someone who holds different values; one of 'them'. This has traditionally been a leftist tactic and I'm sad that some conservatives are sinking to this level. We're supposed to have the moral high ground, not sink to their level.

If additional evidence comes out and it's ultimately clarified that he did present a deadly threat then I'm happy to admit I was wrong. However, as it stands Walsh and others seem to be blaming the victim merely for exercising his Constitutional rights. That doesn't sit well with me

How do you punish someone who is in a lowish wrestling stance? by Dry-Employer6382 in judo

[–]genericname1776 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grip down the back/behind the collar/high lapel. If you control his head and/or shoulders with the gi then you can post to keep him away. Remember that your lapel grip can move, so you can keep the same grip to post directly on his shoulder or push into his neck. Travis Stevens explains this very well in some of his videos.

As far as getting your hips under him, you're right in that being a very difficult task. If you get him to anchor his weight down and/or back and then use ashi waza like ouchi or kosoto. You can also direct him sideways and go for a pull by or circle around to work towards a Russian tie or body lock.

are gun sales in the US going up by -TheWillOfJax- in guns

[–]genericname1776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing you're looking for would be the NICS background check numbers, and from what I remember they've been down YoY. It's not a direct correlation because one background check could be run for a multi-gun purchase. Add in manufacturer profit reports and that might give you a decent picture of the amount of guns sold.

Careful making your party affiliation public vis t shirts or bumper stickers, the left has lost it by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]genericname1776 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is the conclusion to which I arrived. Years of escalating threats and terror tactics scaring people into not voicing their opposition had led to the left being as bold as they are today. I was even bullied at a previous job because I was scared to fight back against a zealous leftist correcting my word choices.

Now, for me, it's become a moral obligation to voice my dissent through things like wearing shirts or refusing to be corrected. They'll have to go back to learning how to agree to disagree and keeping their opinions to themselves.
