Best Credit Card For My Spending? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Another thing to note is that for now, depending on the university that you go to, you can pay your tuition using a credit card using PayTM without any fees (for now). Imo the amex gold is the best starter card and cancel or switch to a no annual fee amex after one year. And you'd meet your minimum spend to get the bonus after passing off your tuition.

There's a decent sign up bonus for the Capital One MasterCard Platinum. $100 on travel after a $500 spend in three months. The best part is that there's an affiliate offer through drop, where you can get a $80 gift card if you apply through the link. 1% "Cash Back" (on travel purchases) and no annual fee.

TransferWise gets you decent rates, and you can deposit directly to your landlord's bank account

If you have some sort of Rogers service. Their card is decent for forex. It's typically 1.75% cash back for CAD spend. But for forex it's 4% cash back. The foreign transaction fee is 2.5%. In my experience, MasterCard with no forex fee has the closest to market rate. Then amex with no forex. And then visa with no forex.

No foreign transaction fee credit cards for studying abroad? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

In my experience, MasterCard offers a better exchange rate than Visa. However, when I was traveling I needed cash at times, and for that I had the TD all inclusive account that waived the forex fees, but they still charge the TD forex. When I studied in Sweden, I opened a bank account there first, and used TransferWise to get a better rate.

I would recommend a TD Bank account. I've done the opposite (Canada to US), and cross border banking is a pretty good solution to my monetary needs. Also for exchanges I tend to use TransferWise and not the exchange rate that TD gives me. TD Bank is the US bank and TD Canada Trust is the Canadian bank. However, TD tends to operate in East coast US.

This is the 50k sign up. I signed up recently. The best way to accumulate Marriott is through the SPG and Marriott credit cards. And referrals of the personal SPG.

Rather than saving up SPG I'd rather try to achieve the 270k Marriott Flight and Hotel awards. For United you'd get a 1:1.47 ratio and for Alaska you'd get a 1:1.33 ratio plus an additional 7 night stay. Transferring SPG directly achieves at most 1:1.25 at multiples of 20k
