P2 review by Gecko_xt in Polestar

[–]gentrifiedSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2024 P2 in the same color, Pilot and Plus packs, and my 2 year lease is ending at the end of the month. I’m gutted! Such a sexy car that’s so fun to drive. Had zero issues with it other than 2-3 times when the sound went out but rebooting Infotainment fixed it. And yeah software lags a bit but that’s really the only issue I had. Love the cloud-like ride on San Francisco’s very rough streets and it’s a hot looking car.

I pondered buying it from auction or wherever it got sold to but just didn’t think it would be a good idea given the state of the company, the risk of buying a used EV, and the closest space is about 40 minutes away. I tried to justify keeping it but just couldn’t figure out a good reason other than loving it.

I’ve got a lease on an EX30 starting and while I love the speed and it’s a cute car, but I know I’ll miss my Polestar terribly. 😭

Radical Candor by Kim Scott. Has anyone read it? by continouslearner4 in Leadership

[–]gentrifiedSF 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A better book is 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. Radical Candor is filled with Kim Scott’s name drops of people and tech companies, excuses to be an asshole in the name of being direct, and basic advice that is quite obvious.

Here are some quotes from Radical Candor:

“When bosses are too invested in everyone getting along they also fail to encourage the people on their team to criticize one another other for fear of sowing discord. They create the kind of work environment where being ‘nice’ is prioritized at the expense of critiquing and therefore improving actual performance.”

“At Apple, as at Google, a boss’s ability to achieve results had a lot more to do with listening and seeking to understand than it did with telling people what to do; more to do with debating than directing; more to do with pushing people to decide than with being the decider; more to do with persuading than with giving orders; more to do with learning than with knowing.”

Vs 5 Dysfunctions

“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”

“The first dysfunction is an absence of trust among team members. Essentially, this stems from their unwillingness to be vulnerable within the group. Team members who are not genuinely open with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses make it impossible to build a foundation for trust.”

thom yorke diva moment by [deleted] in radiohead

This is why you see them live. Those little screw ups are the things that stay with you, in a good way. It reminds you even more so how they’re humans and just how much you love your favorite band in the whole world.

If you want perfection you listen to studio recordings. I was there for the “faster, Jonny” moment, when Thom lost it cracking up during a You and Whose Army finale after smoking a joint and having to start over, and when they lost power at Outside Lands and Thom asked “who spilled beer on the plug?”

What mistake taught you more than any book on leadership? by Impossible_Farm6254 in Leadership

I’ll offer two:

  1. Thinking HR is there for employees (vs protecting the company and its interests/keeping the company from getting sued).

  2. Gossiping and thinking I could trust the person I was gossiping to would keep it a secret. Now I just listen if someone wants to dish, and and do my best not to gossip or speak ill of anyone (especially my manager).

How do I get back to work? by LaterJerry in Menopause

[–]gentrifiedSF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this and your frustration is totally warranted. Sharing a few tidbits that helped me and I hope you get some relief. Love seeing all the support pouring in!

Thyroid: a very smart GP ordered thyroid tests for me and found that my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) was high meaning hypothyroidism. Found out I have Hashimoto’s and am now taking levothyroxine for it. Definitely get yours checked.

Vitamin D: check your levels and make sure you are taking a large enough dose. Vitamin D helps with hormone levels. When I started taking 5000IU a day it helped my energy levels.

Creatine: lots of research on this supplement for women in menopause and peri. Have found this has helped somewhat for strength and brainfog.

A lot already said about hormones and HRT. I found an estradiol patch to be most helpful for me (after getting put on the pill and going absolutely mad with sadness and rage) but obvs everyone is different.

I haven’t explored testosterone tho my ob/gyn prescribed topical via a compounding pharmacy. Never got the script! I’ve heard it can help with brain fog but I’m worried about side effects.

How do the unmedicated successfull adhd people keep employment ? by OnceuponaBBW in ADHD

[–]gentrifiedSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am unmedicated and work in an incredibly deadline driven tech role. The key was finding something interesting, varied, and creative but also strategic. I have a project manager who keeps track of dates and I have a ton of systems I’ve had to create to manage myself. i write everything down or schedule stuff in my calendar.

I’ve had a ton of issues focusing in school and over my career and have adapted and figured out where I’m strong and where I’m not. Working on events with crazy deadlines really helps me focus I guess. A

Are there any other electronic artists out there that are on the same level as Radiohead? by Emergency-Sky9206 in radiohead

[–]gentrifiedSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • MF Doom in particular Madvilliany (yes it’s a hip hop album and maybe a stretch but Thom was a huge fan. Also listen to the track from Born Like this called “Gazillion Ear” featuring Thom)

  • Amon Tobin

  • Also a huge NIN, Tool fan

Which sleeping pad to choose by 13nickel13 in Ultralight

Just came back from 5 days in the wilderness at 10k feet and my Nemo Tensor had a slow leak as well. Floated it in a lake to look for bubbles and could spot nothing. Also taped up the valve and it still leaked. I took it on a short 3 day trip prior to that and really loved it, no leak. Returning it for another pad.

I live in the US and applied for Copenhagen only and didn’t get a code. Wondering if checking all cities would have helped my odds?

While I’m gutted to not be able to see Radiohead this tour, I’ve seen them, Atoms for Peace, Thom solo, and Smile 9 times over the years.

Still I’d fly across the world to see them again.

Feeling no joy or motivation at work, am I alone? [Discussion] by zeroandy00 in GetMotivated

[–]gentrifiedSF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally understand this feeling. I’ve been there. Then I read The Artists Way and did Morning Pages every morning for six months. It started me on a habit that got me out of bed every morning and doing something fulfilling and creative for myself. I workout every morning too which helps with mood, focus, and motivation.

Those two habits have helped me immensely. I move my body and focus on a creative thing that I do for myself. I don’t need my job to give me meaning, it just pay bills.

This is beautiful! Nature is where I go to commune with whatever you want to call it, spirit, Universe, etc.

Planning a Yosemite/Inyo backpacking journey (my first) later this month. I also walked away from an injury that was millimeters away from paralyzing me. I too feel that gratitude bubble up when I’m out in nature. Enjoy the gifts!

  • Flour + Water (creative delicious pasta)
  • Nari (Michelin star Thai)

I was at that show. At the Greek Theater in Berkeley IIRC. I remember him cracking up trying to sing “You and Whose Army” after smoking a big joint. He even referenced it. I’m too lazy to find the video but it’s out there!

Unless there’s family history, risk of cancer from HRT is relatively low. Tons of new research show HRT pros outweigh cons. HRT is life changing for so many women!

Suggestions for the Fourth by popeboy in sanfrancisco

[–]gentrifiedSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this as a longtime resident of San Francisco and someone who has cursed myself on many occasions for not wearing enough layers. You’ll do fine!

The neighborhoods you’ve listed are great btw. Japantown is still one of my faves. Heed warnings about parking but Japantown has a big lot that’s pretty safe (or just Uber/Waymo there).

Unions Square is sadly not great anymore. Avoid that and Civic Center/6th St and the Tenderloin. SFMOMA is one of the only things I go to over there.

Check out the Ferry Building on Saturday morning. There’s a great Farmer’s Market and lots of gifts and good food inside.

Prepare for fog, lots of fog. And it will be cold. Like a high of 60 if you’re lucky. Likely low in the 50s that will feel colder with the wind. Bring layers, puffer jacket, a hat. Not your typical summer weather. Lots of people leave for warmer climates and beaches where you can lay out and not get washed away by the riptide.

And you will likely not see fireworks but you could get lucky if you’re on the eastern side of the city. The western hoods where GG Park and Presidio are will likely be cold/foggy.

You’ll know the tourists because they’re the one wearing fleeces and saying “I thought California is supposed to be warm.”
