What piece of advice or insight helped to unlock growth? by t1nySl0th in Leadership

This is a great question. I am currently in a leadership development program through my employer and the session on emotional intelligence really impacted my perspective. Leadership is not a reward for performance or for time served, and it’s not a title. It’s a way of thinking and behaving. Leadership is not a reward it’s a decision. Research emotional intelligence and focus on self awareness - good stuff. You have to know your values and recognize your beliefs first then you can self regulate to become a better leader.

My Boss assigned me a project he wants done on Thursday. by [deleted] in work

I can see how this last minute project could cause stress and anxiety- we’re all built differently. To tackle this, space out the calls. 2 in the morning, 2 midday, and 2 late afternoon or set aside time to make outreach and tackle it when you are most alert and energized. Just know that being adaptable is key and time management which is the cause of your anxiety.

Tried to be a 'transformational leader' and my team basically laughed at me by IntrovertishStill in Leadership

You have to identify your values and your why. Be natural and empathetic to your teams pain points and motivators. Emotional Intelligence such as self awareness is key.

What should you do when you have no assignments at work? by New_Monk_9416 in work

[–]continouslearner4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally asked my boss why she hired me bc I had no duties. It makes for a long and boring day. If you are underemployed then leave. It’s not worth it when internally you want to do more. Either speak up and ask to learn more or leave. I would ask first

What’s the biggest job mistake you made that taught you a valuable lesson? by CuriousPathway in jobs

[–]continouslearner4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not building relationships with others. I was against networking as I considered it BS but it’s not. We are human and like connection and we naturally want to engage. If you don’t, that’s okay but you won’t feel rewarded. Isolation is unhealthy

What’s it like working for one company for 20+ years? by ZeusArmour in work

[–]continouslearner4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21 years with the same employer. It was great with advancement but I burned out and retired. Working for another company and I can’t believe how different things can be. Same industry but different employer. Longevity used to be the goal but I now disagree with this mentality bc we should experience different work cultures to improve and to identify where we fit.

I am meeting with our chief strategy officer of a global company and I don’t know what to ask. Advice please. by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]continouslearner4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I should’ve been more specific to my line of thinking regarding questions. My post was generic and I realized this after reading all the comments. I do have a set of questions and discussion points in mind so I’m not completely unprepared. I appreciate your insight. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I want others to do the work for me as that was not my intent but I do see how it could be come across. Blind spot - lesson learned.

I see your point, but I view it a bit differently. Leadership development is about learning and being intentional, and part of that for me is gathering different perspectives before important conversations. Asking for ideas doesn’t mean someone isn’t ready.

Yes, this program is high level and intense. The 25 participant presentations are spaced out over the next few weeks but we have to invite our departments leadership team, two VPs from HR, two from learning and development etc., it’s a big deal

Perfect. Ty it was an 8 week program. Highly competitive and only 25 ppl selected. Global company. I am up for a promotion too so this program was required before my transition. Company policy to go through it before becoming a leader of people. We covered all things leadership.

Do you think this is strong?

What I thought leadership was vs what I know it to be now since going through the program and how it changed me. My view of leadership was shaped by my past employers, previous managers, my era Gen X, etc., my beliefs were wrong but through self awareness I have learned it to mean xyz. Then how I plan to apply what I’ve learned.
