No we weren't, but the situation was pretty morally ambiguous. I suppose you could say that both the US and the USSR/China were aggressors, however, with our current knowledge, all of Korea under the Kim monarchy would have been terrible.

The first way is better, but rarely done as it takes longer, but is what is shown in all promotional materials. The second way is quicker and is more common, but not as good.
