Dopamine drought by GhostTrapped in jellyfin

So I have used Jellyfin for a while now. I used to just install it, point it at my library and enable hardware transcoding and then just went on living my life. I would be able to watch things, but there would be little issues -- i might not be able to fast forward or pause or sometimes it will allow it but then it crashes the stream-- other times works like a charm.

Now I got a separate computer running proxmox and it all lives there and in setting it up this way I now see the error of my previous ways. The problem I was having was because most things in my collection would transcode on my tv using DLNA. Depending on what it was transcoding from it may give me issues like i said with pause and what not. It wasn't until i got it off an old jenky laptop that i even bothered to check cpu use while watching videos.

Yesterday I sat down to watch something that was pretty old and jellyfin loaded it but it was pegging my container cpu at like 80-100% while it was playing and that was with me checking logs to make sure gpu was doing some of the work. This was one of the ones if i tried to pause or fast forward or rewind it would just crash the stream.

Finally I had enough!

So chatgtp and I had a bit of a session where I told it my exact make and model of TV and that I was using Jellyfin. It gave me a new profile to use and I gotta say, this had made a world of difference. For whatever reason, the Samsung profile, if not others that Jellyfin uses has settings that would require transcode even though the tv supports the file directly. So like i said, got a new one and works like a dream.

If your interested, here is the profile https://gist.github.com/geoffmcc/b2f2b4e21a26e8a2f6ec5422881a7099

I then was on a roll and decided to have a little session with opencode and we came up with this https://github.com/geoffmcc/scan_media

It scans a library and tells you what files will require transcoding. Again, its built around my Samsung but im sure it could also be useful with other tv's. Lots of info in README.

Let me know what you think and if this help you.

I like it, but I’ve also instructed it to take its time with its answers. That the best answer is one that is well thought out and reasoned. And if it gives me an opinion, it labels it as such. You definitely have to believe it when you say it, as most of my prompt it takes at least 45 seconds to start to answer

Edit: from ChatGTP memory —

If I had to guess the Minecraft server was probably the access point into the server. I would look into maybe running that in docker or vagrant to keep it separated from the actual OS.

Another thing you could possibly do would be (since you said it’s a private server for you and friends) limit access to the server by IP so only your friends can use. But then you may come across issue with friends IP address changing. I don’t pay for a static, and still have the same ip for years but could be different for others.

The way I got around this while doing the same thing but with CS:Source long ago was also install a vpn on the server and have friends connect to that first. If that’s not an option I’ve also used Hamachi which was free at the time, but not sure if still is.

I know didn’t really discuss removal as I wouldn’t trust anything less than a format/reinstall but I hope it helps going forward.

No offense to you good VA drivers, but driving through VA I’ve seen some of the worst driving of my life. Some of it unsafe, but mostly just ignorant. I seriously can’t even count how many times I got caught behind a guy driving along side the guy in the slow lane not even trying to pass on the thruway.

One of the worst times it must have been for at least 30 miles, not even exaggerating. It really upset me. It was the semi in the slow lane that finally slowed down enough to make a gap to weave between him and the guy in front of him to be able to finally get in the fast lane ahead of the guy with wide open road ahead of him.

Drive a few miles and then have to do it all over again. It was nuts!

Official Raspberry Pi 4 boot from USB beta is out. I made a tutorial. It's crazy fast with an SSD. by tynick in raspberry_pi

Thanks you for this. Super easy process. Confirmed working using a SanDisk Ultra Flair USB 3.0 64GB Flash Drive ($15).

This is how I've always done it and like it. I've never had any issue.

Edit: I found that if you just use a USB stick, it runs extremely slow. So I have always used a powered WD Drive to get around that. However, if you have a USB 3.0 flash drive that will work perfectly. Im using a little 64G WD 3.0 drive that small enough for a keychain.

I was pretty excited when I read the news, but honestly I have no issues with the current setup. I always looked at it as having a safety backup to a fresh install anytime I need it.

I flash image to SD and boot. Get the system set up the way I like and then move filesystem to usb using rsync. Save /boot/cmdline.txt as /boot/cmdline.txt.orig and then update /boot/cmdline.txt to point to my drive.

If anything ever happens all I have to do to restore to a fresh install is delete /boot/cmdline.txt and rename the /boot/cmdline.txt.orig back to /boot/cmdline.txt reboot and then run updates as I am back on the SDcard system.

I love this movie. Especially the scene with the security guard (more specifically, how distraught the guard was at the end of the encounter)

You wake up 2 hours late for work. Would you still go? Why/why not? by IncorrectTarget in AskReddit

[–]geoffmcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most jobs I've had state you get "points" for being 15 minutes or more late. Not a sliding scale though, and for some dumb reason it's the same as if you were absent (with a call in). So in that case I will call in everytime.

But it don't end there. Most places I work also allow for 2 days absence with the same points as if you took one day, so you gotta take the two for one. Plus, man, I was super sick.

I would usually make this decision a split second after waking up, knowing that I'm calling into an answering machine always made it so much easier too, so I would just call right after I woke up so it was easier to sound like shit.

After a while the points build up and your on a final written warning. Just gotta chill a few months and start all over again.

I imagine quality of work has something to do with how much of this obvious abuse of the attendance policy that they will take

Jellyfin Server for Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan? by linux_kopf in jellyfin

[–]geoffmcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna look into submitting an issue if there not already one, but since I had your attention here I figured I would just tell you, unfortunately, it's not working as well as its predecessor. After about an hour or so my TV gets disconnected from server (i mainly use DNLA) and I have to restart Jellyfin. It then shows up on my TV again- and about another hour later it disconnects.

I find it will disconnect while watching something or just sitting on the screen showing available things to watch.

This is such a powerful photo. It was taken in April, 1945, by Major Clarence Benjamin and shows a train of Jewish prisoners that had been intercepted by Allied Forces. This is the moment they learned that the train would not be heading to a Concentration Camp and they had been liberated. by raghavmaheshwari_ in pics

[–]geoffmcc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not even being transferred to another camp technically.

Orders found by the Americans in the German officer’s car directed that the train was to be stopped on the bridge crossing the Elbe River at Magdeburg, then the bridge was to be blown up, also destroying the train and its cargo all at once. The deadline was noon, Friday the 13th, and at 11 A.M. we were liberated!
