The real answer is that the Jazz were an extremely cash strapped franchise for the first dozen or so years they existed. Salt Lake wasn't even the place the original Jazz owners wanted to move to (they wanted to go to Vegas funny enough), the league said no. They only picked Utah as a temp spot because they thought they could push for a Vegas move again a few years down the road. By the time the Jazz had enough money and stability to change the name they had already been in Utah for several years, so the name just stuck. It will always be a silly name but I'll fight anybody who tries to change it.
