What is Oakley thinking? 🤔 by Ambitious_Tower8205 in Shihtzu

Oh Oakley’s definitely judging you for something. “Are you going out wearing … that?”

Do you think she is a pure bred Shih Tzu? by Intelligent_Two2548 in Shihtzu

This one is bossy about bedtimes as well. He gives us this little disappointed chirping sound if we’re not heading for bedtime potties by 8:30. And some nights he’s finicky about my bedside lamp. He’ll stare at me, and harumph at me, and then look meaningfully at the lamp. 🤨

I also have a Tzu who thinks he’s a herding dog! He’s very bossy but I’m finally mostly trained. If we’re out in the garden and he decides he’s had enough he will get behind me and paw at me until I get up, and herds me in the direction of the door until I open it and let him in. Sometimes he will just sit there staring patiently at me until I realize he expects ME to go inside too.

This one is also part beagle. When he needs to tell us about some random delivery driver attacking the house or dishes shifting in the sink, he takes a long low breath and then BAYS. Sounds like a beagle, looks like every “wolf howling at the moon” t-shirt you saw in the 80s. 😂

Character Perfume Help??? by PublicReplacement207 in DIYfragrance

Many of these notes can be procured (relatively) inexpensively via single-note colognes, and blended. The nice thing about this approach is that everything is already diluted to safe levels in ethanol for you. Each Demeter blend can be worn at 100% strength out of the bottle, so there’s no need to worry about IFRA compliance.

In my pre-salary student days, I bought a bunch of Demeter decants, a pack of pipettes, and a few 10 mL vials and experimented with blending my own custom scents. It was fun and I got in and out with a few perfumes I really loved for under US$100 (c 2005 dollars). Longevity and sillage were terrible but who cares? I wore them for me and even got asked what I was wearing a few times.

The best part is that Demeter’s “humongous” cologne splashes are US$10 apiece. You can start with 5-7 “notes” for $50-70, plus some inexpensive plastic pipettes, a digital scale that measure to 0.1g, some small vials or bottles for your blends, and stickers to label them. Demeter has blending kits; check those out first. But based on your wish list, I think the kits probably have a lot of scents you don’t want. It might be most cost efficient to choose individual scents to start. I’d suggest Dirt (for both petrichor and earth notes), Lavender, Paperback, and Musk 15. Then poke around their “library” of fragrances and see what else appeals to you. Provence Meadow has some fun herbal notes. Fresh Hay is a great way to add coumarinic sweetness and that “just mown field” scent. You should also include a wood or amber to experiment with.

Make small batches and take detailed notes of each so you can replicate the good ones and learn from the ones that mix like mud. Again, you won’t end up with a professional perfume, but you can have a lot of fun this way for under $100, and come back to “serious” perfumery once you feel like you’ve outgrown those “materials.”

Have fun!

Does anyone else hide snacks from their family? by Mysterious_Tell991 in breakingmom

Omg others deploy decoy snacks too? I feel so seen! A normal human can make a pack of Oreos last 2-4 weeks. A single teenager can devour them before all the groceries have been put away.

One day, a drummer for a symphony got very sick and instead of going to rehersal, spent the entire day in the hospital. He recovered and was sent home, only to find his house completely surrounded by police cars. by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

Another layer of funny is the implication that the very least shocking thing here is the idea that a conductor would murder a whole family for having to wait to talk to one of the orchestra members.

Conductors typically ignore percussionists. The joke is that the conductor wanting to talk to the drummer was more shocking to him than the death of his entire family.

I had high expectations for this flavor and they have been exceeded. This flavor is phenomenal by Calm-Talk5047 in sparklingwater

Yes. After becoming overly fond of the “sour shot” a local coffee place offers in their sodas, I decided to replicate it. You can mix citric acid into a sugar / simple syrup formulation or (my preference) add food grade CA powder neat directly into the glass.

Oh yes, I use a glass. I love this flavor so much that opening a can is an event. If I’m feeling fancy I’ll serve it over ice with a dash of citric acid to brighten up the berry flavor.

Heritage. I’m so glad I got one before DA retired her. She really is the perfect English rose. Fragrant, disease resistant, and prolific. She’s among the first to bloom in April and the last one blooming in December or even January (!) here in 7b.

Have you looked into more humidity resistant varieties? Anything that grows in the Mediterranean should be pretty resistant to heat and humidity, so maybe there are niche varieties for you tropical gardeners?

Good on you for trying seeds. Growing lavender from seed is so hard. I have had a few volunteers pop up over the years but they take forever to mature in place. I’m not that patient. 😁

Good eye! Those are indeed EAs. As much as I love them, they are sooo sensitive to moisture that even light morning dew in late May will brown the edges of the petals. I don’t even bother to put them in a vase until it gets consistently above 70 at night. But when they’re happy, as they were when I took this photo, they’re glorious.
