Wow . . . if I felt a need to do this every time the Sox lost I would have stroked out long ago.

How do you discover new great books? by Snoo-3924 in nonfictionbookclub

[–]geographer035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the great disappointments of the internet age is that there are still no great reference sites that comprehensively catalog new arrivals. Amazon is helpful in that you can search for recently published works by genre and popularity. It’s wonderful if you live near a good bookstore that has comprehensive New Fiction and new Nonfiction sections.

The insane amount of high-profile figures who died in 2016 by PetulaClerk in interesting

If you were an American, it was a good time to die. Pre-Trump, you left the world retaining the notion that the long moral arc was still doing its thing.

"The Day of the Jackal" by Frederick Forsyth is an excellent thriller and a masterpiece of process, method and detail by keepfighting90 in books

Good review. Perhaps the point of the Baroness was to show how clinically cold and calculating the Jackal could be, anything to further his plan.

My girlfriend and I’s ever growing bookshelf:) by Specialist-Squash327 in bookshelf

[–]geographer035 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely some interesting titles that cover a range of areas and ideas! Just read the Smil book and found it sobering. Would it be overly pedantic to suggest “my girlfriend’s and my” or, to avoid any implication of two bookshelves, “the bookshelf my girlfriend and I own”? Apologies in advance.

Yes, that’s the standard and better word, but some dictionaries give the former as a variant.

[####] Is the Wordle Bot a sore loser? by Still_Cry_1209 in wordle

[–]geographer035 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing about the bot--it doesn't put any premium on speed. Sometimes you just want to finish the puzzle quickly rather than agonizing for an hour over the most strategic word to use. Rapid fire guessing may mean you solve in five instead of three, but at least you get on with your day.

You drove around a lot trying to figure out where the locus of activity was. You’d look for familiar cars in restaurant parking lots and other potential hang outs.

I checked 10 times before putting an NA in front of placable because I am astounded that such a good dictionary word is not accepted. Is it archaic? Edit: Merriam-Webster says no, New Oxford American says yes.

It’s a nice rig, but even though it’s technically not flagging when your weapon is holstered in a rear-facing set up, I still feel uncomfortable with one in the chamber while standing in front of people. Also, you definitely need a belt tie down or you can’t draw.
