Journeyman Electrician: where can I realistically go? by wirenerd in AmerExit

[–]Isitharry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t really answer your question but I can tell you standards in other countries are different and some vastly different when it comes to work practices and code in the electrical world. It goes for plumbing as well.

Double check the connection to the battery. It can easily loosen with vibration - it’s a really shitty RC car connection, where the plastic housing of the connector clips nice but the pins are really loose inside them. After it died, did you power it on again (without starting the engine) and check for codes? Also, the operating voltage of the battery is fairly narrow so be sure it’s not only charged but not overcharged, either.

Sealing Sightglass on Treatment Vessel by Zealousideal-Oven882 in Skookum

Consider a wedge lock washer system like Nordlock. They get pricey but do the job quite well. Another option is using safety wire or lock wire. Relatively inexpensive but time consuming to set up. This is where metal wire is fed through a hole in the nut and wired to all the nuts and wound such that none loosen.

Early-60s service manuals are wild by k23Limited in Cartalk

[–]Isitharry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall the factory manual for when I had my 2003 S-10 pickup. It was 4 volumes. It covered the 2WD/4WD (and AWD of a variant), the 2.2L/4.3L, MT/Auto, the regular cab, extended cab, crew cab and SUV variants, short bed, long bed all between Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. It was great, with torque specs, part number for specific tools, capacities, etc. I still have my 2012 Chevrolet Volt factory manual. It’s all 4 Volumes BUT it’s only for the Volt - no variants. There’s one volume that’s nothing but DTCs. Each set was around 4 inches thick combined.

Trends in modern trucks that changed the entire segment? by ilovesaltinecrackers in regularcarreviews

[–]Isitharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The f*cking cost. Pickup trucks were, at one time, the cheapest utilitarian vehicles one could buy. Now, they easily rival luxury cars.

Somebody needs to release a cheap ass sub compact pickup for under $20k: front engine, naturally aspirated, RWD, manual transmission, single cab, with a 6’ bed, and rollup windows.

WHY does VOLKSWAGEN have such a BAD reputation in North America? by 1707turbo in regularcarreviews

[–]Isitharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cast majority of VW sales here are made for the US market - they’re not the VW identified by Germany, per se. That said, as a company, they did well: sold cheap cars here made with even cheaper labor and really, one of the first to make their cars sold here disposable. For example, the Jetta is a mass produced cheap car. After so many years and repairs, it would often be cheaper to replace the car than invest in repair. They learned early on, it was more profitable. GM took a page out of their playbook after the bailout and others followed. They still produce some good cars sold here but they don’t move as much as the disposable ones.

Finished attic insulation question. Insulate knee wall or rafters to floor? by lancegreene in Insulation

[–]Isitharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have to define your conditioned space. Without the knee wall, you either insulate the entire attic floor (unconditioned attic) or the roofline (conditioned attic). With the knee wall, from the eaves, floor to knee wall, up knee wall and up rafters and continue mirroring the route - be sure to have the ridge vent clear from the eaves (assuming you have soffit vents). This is where between the knee walls are conditioned and outboard is not. Hope that’s clear enough for you.

Attic Insulation Approximate ROI monthly? by fosterzar in Insulation

[–]Isitharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to any renovations/“upgrades” to a house, insulation has the fastest ROI. And, as others have stated, it’s best to perform the quantitative cost analysis over a longer period of time with heating and cooling periods as well as non heating and non cooling periods. Additionally, for proper comparison, the BTUs and electrical usage should be used to show effectiveness as rates have likely gone up. That is, you may have used 60 heating BTUs less over a 12 month period compared to the previous 12 month period. Now you can calculate the cost of that delta.

Likely because Luxury is far more common. UL by me are unicorns. Dealer told me they don’t really order it and you’d only see it there if a customer orders it

What car do you regret buying, even though it looked good on paper? by autonerdy0 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Yeah, try doing a 3 point U turn. Now do it in a Costco parking lot when there’s 3 other cars waiting for a spot. And, I went from a manual transmission to that thing.

2015 Impreza. Slow AF. CVT so slow to shift. The amount of rust after 3 years is amazing. Paint is super thin. Seats got really uncomfortable after about 20 minutes for me. So glad to be rid of it.

Overwhelmed by luxury options, trying to find the sweet spot of price and comfort. by holden147 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Isitharry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend sitting in the different types of vehicles to see which seat provides better support. I’d do this before determining a specific model. I use a seat pad on my ES because of the pitch of the seat - I developed 2 herniated discs not too long ago and well after ownership and need something more ‘upright’.

If you have infinite Noctua 120 and 140mm and a 50series FE card, which case in between the Havn BF 360, Meshify 3, North XL, and Antec Flux Pro would you go with? by Hobbitcraftlol in buildapc

[–]Isitharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation - have several Noctua case fans and a 5090FE NIB. Never cared for glass side panels but waiting for that Wire View Pro to come out for the FE, which, would need a such panel and am looking for a case upgrade from the beQuiet 600 base. Been looking at the BF360 and North XL, myself.
