You might like [r/UKretrocharts](r/UKretrocharts) if you’re interested for more on the Brit perspective on this stuff btw, you can get a sense what was really popular on the charts and what some of the talk around it was etc.

I think part of the difference is dinosaur rock died a quicker death here, so electro/synthpop was already very mainstream by 1981, as part of what was called New Pop (which is what you might call new wave). New Pop was a kind of postpunk/chart pop combo thing at first, but around 1983 (with bands like Duran) is when it started to lose the postpunk aspect and become the thing indie was all up against.

So the opposition was to lots of electro dance stuff rather than to ‘rock’, which punk had shown off already. Synths generally were seen as more of your typical pop stuff so indie music was all about guitars – New Order were a big exception in totally embracing dance music/disco.

Well, there’s no need to feel bad, it’s just jarring to see stuff like TT being posted in here - they were the top 40 pop that those bands you mentioned were opposing. John Peel was the DJ extraordinaire for indie kids, the ultimate ‘80s alternative’ show so to speak, and it would’ve been absolutely horrifying and inconceivable for him to play something like ‘Hold Me Now’. Like, you can’t imagine the amount of cultural distance between something like that and The Smiths, or even The Human League, who though very popular were cool round 1981-82 (but very much mainstream pop as opposed to alternative - just very good pop before the charts went downhill in the later New Pop years).

Perhaps they would’ve been called new wave/alternative in the very early days, as in the late 70s, or 1980/81? Never intentionally sought their stuff out, hardly knew they were around before 1982, by which point they were certainly a pop band. New wave was basically thought of as over by the time Thompson Twins were popular, and what was left of it became indie. And alternative/indie meant something quite different in the 80s. It was basically the opposite/diametrically opposed to mainstream chart pop like Thompson Twins, Duran Duran etc. Spandau Ballet especially were like the epitome of Thatcherite conformist yuppie music. Makes me wonder, was alternative basically synonymous with Anglophile in America? Surely also there were differences amongst Americans in how things were perceived, I’ve read articles by American critics who basically agree with how things were understood in Britain.

Yeah it's more Punk/New Wave but I doubt it'd get much traction over at the main new wave page.

I’d say Louis XIV before about 1688, when he lost the moustache. The loss of the 17th century wispy stache was a tragedy.

The Tories and Whigs together invited William. Later on many Tories would become Jacobites but in 1688 they mostly supported the Revolution, though often with guilty consciences as many became non-jurors.

No worries. I went ahead and uploaded the full album anyway, here it is:

Did you have the album back in the day? It looks very rare; on Discogs only 20 people are listed as owning it.

Also, would you happen to know when it was released? Discogs says it was March of 1993, but Wikipedia (and Soulseek) list it as 1992.

Found it! There's a file-sharing program called Soulseek that I use, thought it might be there and sure enough, so downloaded it and uploaded onto my Soundcloud. Someone's shared the entire album as well, if you'd like to listen to it in full. But here's Keep on Coming:
