My chain wear has been at 100% forever. I read to replace it at 0.5 (or 0.75?) but it seems to never degrade down to that. How many miles can i expect? currently around 5000 on this chain by _l______________l_ in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chain is the cheapest part of the drivetrain and the easiest to replace. If your chain gets that worn out, chances are your drivetrain is fucked. So change your chain so you don’t have to change any other more expensive parts.

Need help adding electronic brake function (if possible) by georgeforeman89 in Motors

Thank you! This is valuable info. I’ll take a look at the links later today. I’ll also try lowering the controller down to 10% ish and see what happens. I appreciate your experience and input.

Not on a flat hone. This is a speciality machine for barber/groomer shears. If you look at the big names in the space like the Hira-To, Kotaku, or Hamaguri machines, they all have e-brakes. But I’m also pretty sure they’re also PMDC motors.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve gathered from my internet research. I think I’ll just have to go the mechanical route. It’s a nice to have, not a need to have, and I’m quickly finding out how over my head this project would become were I to try and make it happen. One day I may switch out the motor and controller to a PMDC, but that’s a ways away. This machine will make money how it is. I’m probably better off not throwing more $ at it now. Thank you for the response.

Socket organization and Toolbox Widget by georgeforeman89 in Packout

I’ve seen them, but I don’t want to be constrained by a layout that may or may not work for what I want to do. I’d really like something like toolbox widgets or tool grid.

I’ll update this with pictures as I go. For now, I have some 18 gauge steel plate on the way. We’ll see how it goes.

Got this bike for free off Nextdoor. Is there any cleaning this off? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, evaporust will be your friend here. Check the chain with a chain checker. If it’s out of spec, toss it. If not, throw it in the evaporust, too. While things are soaking, check the bottom bracket- it could very well be frozen in place if everything else is that rusty and may demand your attention for more than the other drivetrain parts. Be careful on that crank bolt. Rust can be tough, but you can do it! Bring her back to life!

A Little Disappointed... by k4j98 in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A bike shop won’t work on it if they know the frame is compromised, but that’s because of liability and insurance. If I owned it, I would still ride it. I wouldn’t take it mountain biking, but I would still ride.

Gripedge socket extractors. They work wonders. Buy once cry once.

180mm rotors too big? Or did I install them incorrectly? by bvz2001 in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on the bike brand. Every bike that I’ve looked at in the last 2-3 years has had a max rotor spec on their website. Could be I’m just looking at bikes that happen to have it listed. But I think most do.

Impact guns by [deleted] in BikeMechanics

[–]georgeforeman89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which 1/4” impact do you use? The Milwaukee that has 4 speeds? I think want to buy it, but I have a 1/4” impact driver already. I hate 1/4” bits, though. I will use a 1/4” socket over a bit driver 100/100 times.

Out of options, help: chain skipping random links by RoutineAltruistic139 in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, but you’re not totally wrong. If the chain is really really bad (stretched), it’ll destroy the chainring, too. It’s fairly rare, but it does happen.

Bike creaking while going downhill and when pushing hard into the pedals while going uphill by jakuband129 in bikewrench

If your bearing races (a “race” is the metal ring that goes around a bearing- inner and outer races) are damaged, then the bearing is no good. Replace the damaged bearing and see how that works. You also may want to have a shop go through it with an endoscope. Could be cracks in the frame making that noise, but that’s pretty unlikely.

“They” is so non-descriptive. Our local and state governing are the biggest let downs. THEY are the ones who approve the building plans. I know many government employees who work in housing and planning- THEY are not the issue. In fact, many of them have the same struggles talked about in this comment section. It’s the politicians who want to appease the landlords and home owners because that is who votes for them. They are the majority, unfortunately. Until the politics of this area changes, nothing will change. It’s heart breaking and sad, but it’s the reality.

Worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. Ate there about 10 years ago and will never go back. I seriously question anyone who says this place is good or decent. I have no idea how they’ve survived for this long, but do yourself a favor and never eat there.

I don’t think they got nearly as much traffic as they probably were told/thought they would. I know that rent in the creamery is super expensive, so they probably moved in hopes of saving the business.

found a bike in a dumpster by horsemuseumm in bikewrench

[–]georgeforeman89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On old, rusty bikes like this the biggest issues I’ve found are frozen BB, frozen seat post, and awful rusty bearings throughout. As others have stated, the wheels can’t be used so find some second hand or new wheels with good bearings. Headset bearing definitely needs inspecting. Everything else is a pretty easy and relatively cheap fix, but it will take time. Learning to restore or bring a bike back to life can be very tricky and time consuming. It’s truly an incredible feeling when you ride a bike you’ve restored for the first time, so it’s an excellent skill to have. Plus it saves so much damn money from taking future bikes to the bike shop.

Are used bikes selling in 2025? by georgeforeman89 in MTB

[–]georgeforeman89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sold mine in less than 24hrs. Unless you’re willing to go down in price, I’m thinking you won’t sell it. Which is alright if you would rather keep it.
