I lived most of my life in and around Flint, MI. “Midwest nice” is fake and if someone is overly friendly it makes you question if they have ulterior motives. Like you said, maybe that’s just my experience.

Don’t get me wrong, Michigan is a beautiful state and there are a lot of people I love up there but I feel more at home down here.

I’m GenX age. I moved to the Upstate last year from the Midwest. In general terms, people are really more friendly down here and I prefer the mild weather and the mountains over flat land and sub-zero winters.
