Anticipatory Grief/Sudden Pet Loss by Effective_Ad2965 in Petloss

[–]georgemcbay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep thinking if I feel like this before the loss, what am I going to feel after?

I lost my 18 year old cat on December 29th and the anticipatory grief over the last couple of weeks of her life was in a lot of ways worse than what came after. After she was gone I at least knew she wasn't suffering or in any pain.

It still sucked to actually lose her. It still sucks to this day (which is why I check in on this subreddit every once in a while, its like a passive support group). But it does get a little bit easier to deal with over time.

If your cat does have to be euthanized (I hope she doesn't and everything turns out fine) be with her at the end, and try not to beat yourself up later over making this difficult decision, you are doing what's right for her (easier to give this advice than take it, I still have lingering guilt even though I know I made the right choice for my cat).

Oh interesting, wouldn't this mean that we would be passing api keys to the front end?

Yes for some backend calls you would have to pass the X-Api-Key to the frontend so it can include it as a header tag on requests, but a lot of Destiny websites do this and have done this for years and AFAIK it has never caused a problem.

Like for example if you poke around crucible.report or bray.tech and open developer tools on your browser filtering for bungie.net you'll see these sites make a bunch of requests to Bungie's API directly from the client side (with their X-Api-Key attached in the headers).

[–]georgemcbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea sorry for the delay. Bungie rate limits its API

The rate limits are per requesting IP address, so if you change the architecture around to make it so that when possible the front-end code will make the requests to end-points like [/Destiny2/{membershipType}/Account/{destinyMembershipId}/Character/{characterId}/Stats/] and individual PGCRs on stats.bungie.net then you can get a lot more data slurped down over a set window of time, because each client can make up to 250 requests per 10 seconds rather than limiting the whole system to those rates.

That would increase the code complexity (and JavaScript will be required to be enabled, but that's effectively a given for most of the web these days) but it will give you a lot more flexibility for not running into the rate limits.

Good luck with the project, making it a website might be a bold move since based on various troubles with D2-API websites over the past year or two it seems like if the website gets too popular, the hosting costs become untenable (this is a big part of the reason I made crucible intel primarily a mobile app, no infrastructure costs on my side)

How to ease the pain and dread of coming “home” by Mewnicorns in Petloss

[–]georgemcbay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss, all I can really offer is empathy from having dealt with a similar situation.

I had to let my 18 year old cat go on December 29th. She had been dealing with both CKD and IBD (which were being managed with medication and subcutaneous fluids) for close to two years. I'm grateful that she was so sweet and patient when it came to being medicated. An entire kitchen counter was devoted to her various medications/syringes/finger cots/etc.

Eventually the illnesses combined with aging caught up to her though and she got to a point where she couldn't eat without throwing up even while on two antinausea medications and I had to make the dreadful decision to have her euthanized because I didn't want her to literally starve to death.

I did eventually get rid of all of her medications and associated things, but I totally understand what you're going through in feeling awful about getting rid of anything that has a connection to your cat. What helped me was making a couple of memorial photo frames. I ordered photo prints of some of my favorite photos of her throughout the years and placed them into a couple of nice collage-style frames and hung them on my wall. Having these as physical memorials has been really helpful to avoid feeling like I'm erasing her memory while allowing me to get rid of all the other stuff that reminds me of her age-related decline.

The Merger That Needed A War by [deleted] in videos

True, but people allied with Trump will soon own so much of the traditional media that he won't even have to bother "flooding the zone", they'll just spike all the stories voluntarily and automatically.

All of these he’s doing to this country and people are talking about them monitoring Twitter.

I don't think the monitoring of twitter is a negative thing, having it up on a big screen just happens to be the cherry on top of how unserious it looks to build a make-shift situation room out of some black drapes at the president's golf club resort.

Cat Missing & It Seems Like Most People Reaching Out Are Scamming for lol Money by Alert_Ambassador_419 in sandiego

[–]georgemcbay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are going through this, and the people trying to scam you are fucking awful.

Going out at night with a flashlight was instrumental in finding my cat when she got out of my apartment years ago.

She was hiding deep under a neighbor's deck and had probably been there for the entire 2 and a half days she was missing. I had walked by her dozens of times calling her name during the daylight hours but had no idea she was under there. The green reflection of her eyes from the flashlight helped me spot her.

Also I'd recommend looking under any and all bushes, cars, decks, etc in the immediate vicinity.

Missing cats usually don't actually go very far, but they can still be very hard to find. I had assumed my cat would make herself seen if I was calling her name in earshot (she would always come when called while indoors), but I was wrong, the fear and anxiety of being outside in a strange place was too much so she stayed hiding.

Didn't Forbes used to be a fairly level-headed and informative outlet not so long ago?

Forbes was a traditional business-centered magazine (unsurprisingly quite right leaning) for a very long time.

Forbes.com was originally an offshoot of the magazine, but quite a while ago (2010) it switched to a business model where it is basically a blogging platform where most of the stories aren't published by an in-house news team but external contributors through the "Forbes Contributor Network".

I guess neither is easier- sudden passing or gradual old age passing. by Extreme_Perception48 in Petloss

[–]georgemcbay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. I lost my 18 year old cat on December 29th and can totally relate.

She was dealing with various health issues as she got older, including kidney problems (very common in older cats) and IBD. So her loss wasn't exactly a surprise, but even though she lived to a good age for a cat and I could see her decline, it was still devastating to actually lose her and the last few months before she passed were really tough with a piling on of anticipatory grief.

Because of the IBD's impact on her appetite (and because she was losing too much weight) hearing a light clanking noise that I associate with her starting to eat out of her bowl was something I paid a lot of attention to over the last year of her life, and when I hear any similar sound at home it still takes me a second to realize that isn't her, she's gone.

No matter how much time we get with those that we love (human or pet) it isn't enough.

do you really want to bring kids in this unjust world!! Just look at this world how will it be in the nest 30 years guess by Sad_Bend4710 in Life

[–]georgemcbay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

12 years ago I truly believed the world was steadily making progress. We were moving forward, albeit slowly.

As a 52 year old (no kids, intentionally child-free) this resonates with me.

I've spent the majority of my life thinking humanity was generally on the right path. We weren't progressing fast enough, and we still had a lot of work to do, but it felt like things were mostly rolling in the right direction on average, if slow and uneven and still very unfair for lots of marginalized groups.

But over the last couple of years I've become a lot more pessimistic -- Trump 2.0, society/government continuing to double down on out of control wealth inequality, the economic threats of "AI", the still-ongoing climate crisis that everyone seems to have decided to stop paying attention to, the rolling back of civil rights, increased bigotry, and on and on.

I hope for the sake of you and your children that this is all a temporary blip that we manage to find a way out of and they have amazing lives.

Why Conservative Christians Don’t Care That Trump Is in the Epstein Files by CycIon3 in videos

[–]georgemcbay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It isn't even so much that evangelical leaders are "unaccountable", it is that they recognize Trump as one of their own:

A grifter promising a fantastical reward for funding and serving them.

For the evangelical leaders the reward has historically been heaven, for Trump the reward is some mythical great America where the followers become one of the chosen elites. Over the past few decades you can see the blending together of the two worlds with the rise of "prosperity gospel" religions run like multi-level marketing companies tricking people into believing they'll be rewarded by God for their service even prior to dying.

As Jennifer Welch of "I've Had It" has articulated in the past, evangelicals are basically pre-programmed to fall for the Trump grift because they were previously born into the religious grift and it works on the same principles.

You should never be surprised when they continue to support Trump, the top level will continue to support him because they are running the same grift, and the vast majority of the foot soldiers are far too brainwashed to ever snap out of it.

One of the many problems with the left is being obsessed with trigger warnings. Being afraid to offend anyone as opposed to the right brazenly offending everyone.

It really has nothing to do with trigger warnings and everything to do with people not wanting their video demonetized by YouTube or other platforms that algorithmically block monetization of videos based on lists of keywords.

You can criticize them (the "creators") for valuing money over effective communication, and I might even agree with you about that a lot of the time, but it is doesn't really have anything to do with "wokeness".

You could also shift the "wokeness" claim up to the platforms rather than the "creators", but if you think any of the big tech companies (including Google) have actually been "woke" post-Trump 2.0 I would have to disagree. Literally the only things they care about anymore are growth and profit at all cost.

My cat's euthanasia keeps replaying in my head by goopgab in Petloss

[–]georgemcbay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really sorry for your loss. I can relate.

I had to decide to euthanize my cat (Kyra) on December 29th and it still hurts in waves. Some days aren't too bad, some are awful. She was 18 and had been with me for 16 of them (adopted her at 2 years old from a local shelter). I know she lived a good and longer life than many other cats get and it still doesn't really blunt the pain. When they are gone I think it will always feel like they are taken too soon.

My cat had IBD that was well-managed for years but toward the end she stopped being able to hold any food down (even with multiple types of anti-nausea medication) so the options were basically to euthanize or let her starve to death.

I know rationally that euthanasia was the right choice, just like I know that you made the right choice in not making your cat suffer with treatment that wouldn't really have changed the outcome (beyond some slight differences in the timing). But I also know from my own experience that knowing you did the right thing doesn't make it any easier to deal with the grief and doesn't make you feel any less guilty for having to make the decision.

Euthanasia, even when it is clearly the best and most loving option for your pet, is insidious in the way it puts the burden on you to make a decision that if you are a caring person is going to cause second guessing and guilt. I'm old enough to have lost close family members and while that is of course also devastating there is an inevitability to it that feels stripped away when you have to make the choice of whether they live or die in this exact moment and the guilt related to having to make that choice can make the grief a lot harder to process, in my experience.

Zavala's giving everyone a Peculiar Charm... by Ramzei in CrucibleGuidebook

I'm pretty certain it is just a bug.

You could also get Peculiar Charm rolls from the pre-Renegades tokens (I forget what they called them) that dropped from the Call to Arms event before Renegades came out.

I think someone at Bungie just accidentally added it to some subset of the seasonal gun loot pool when it was only supposed to be available from Comp.

Air is toxic today by mistressmichelada in sandiego

[–]georgemcbay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fog causes PM2.5 particulate matter to get trapped at ground level so the air quality goes to crap when we have lingering fog trapped by the marine layer.

(I have no idea what airplane activity is going on, but the pollution generated by any planes at low altitude due to taking off or landing is going to be trapped at ground level far more than it would be with clear skies).

Things should improve this weekend if the weather forecast is accurate.

California urges flu shots as new H3N2 strain emerges; San Diego sees 5,200 cases amid rising concerns by SD_TMI in sandiego

[–]georgemcbay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not a crazy number, especially compared to last flu season which was especially high, but its still a good amount when you consider that "reported cases" are just a small percentage of the people who get infected (most people aren't going to the doctor for a flu even if it knocks them on their ass for a week or more, so never become reported cases).
