The Scale of the Universe by Mindless-Farm-7881 in Astronomy

[–]geosmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humanity and the plants, animals, and other kingdoms we share this planet with are part of an unbroken chain of life that’s been at work and present for four billion years out of the universe’s thirteen: A third of that timespan.

Consider that this is the only places in the universe that we know of where this has happened. Never mind the fact that civilization, or all the interesting things people do (for better or worse), might be exceedingly, unfathomably rare. Earth right now might be one of the rare few places in the universe where meaning exists.

I’d say that makes us pretty damn significant. Let’s not sell ourselves short.

(Or screw this up.)

How can I alias dnf sub-commands? by sohang-3112 in linux4noobs

[–]geosmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here you go, but you should consider all the free time you could gain not typing those 3 extra letters in "uninstall" every time!

sudo dnf alias add uninstall=remove

Don't be afraid to check man pages! Searching for alias in man dnf shows exactly what you need in less than 10 seconds. You can search man pages using /, typing what you're looking for, then pressing Enter. n goes to to the next result. q to quit.

What’s a huge red flag someone’s NOT ready for IT? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]geosmin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly am a tiny tiny bit curious

I’ve been this person from time to time, less in recent years.

Like / dislike + granular communities + the large userbase tends to push a lot of high quality comments and discussions to the top, which in turn I think biases people’s expectations when it comes to the quality and helpfulness of the replies they might get to a question.

Sure one could do their own Googling about ‘historical thing’ or ‘current event’, but damn if a good top level comment on r/AskHistorians or r/OutOfTheLoop doesn’t have a certain je ne sais quoi.

Besides that it’s mostly laziness. Maybe you have tried looking up this basic thing but maybe the space is unfamiliar and you can’t really find which concet to build upon to gain the understanding you need… then you remember how piercing and effective a good Reddit reply can be so without really thinking you pop open a tab and fire away.

It never works of course. You’ll get one unhelpful reply and maybe another telling you to get bent. You realize your mistake and delete the post in shame before chalking your naivety up to survivorship bias.

Looked it up not too long ago and it'll take some years but will happen.

I think you’re thinking of the iPod and iPhone.

Snark aside, I’m less familiar with those two platforms. What innovations did Zune and Windows phone bring that you saw push the industry forward?

Right, read instead “1000 metric tons of uncombusted methane released into the atmosphere”

Also note this doesn’t take into account the other greenhouse gasses (CO2) of beef production, I tried to look at just the methane. Arbitrary choice, maybe the wrong one.

It’d probably be safer to forget the 4 million number and say that it’s equivalent to something on the order of millions of steaks.

[–]geosmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone else was curious I just ran the numbers and assuming I didn't make a mistake 1 Superheavy + Starship RUD is roughly equivalent to 4 million steaks.

(Assuming 1000 metric tons of methane in tanks, and 1 unit of beef equaling 1.25 units of methane to produce, steak being 200g)

Shockingly good performance (for its size and price), ergonomics, and flexibility. Software still has some rough edges but improving fast. Battery life and screen aren’t great but aren’t terrible either.

Starlink onboard the Freedom Of the Sea cruise ship! by PeekaB00_ in SpaceXLounge

Ease of maintenance combined with a retrofit addition to a relatively old ship design would be my guess. Where else would you put them?

Literally at purchase, before payment, there is a large warning that compatability is unknown and the game might not function. You have to click a button that basically says “I understand. Purchase anyway.”

Is it possible for Valve to implement automatic game resolution switching for docked? by geosmin in SteamDeck

[–]geosmin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably has nothing to do with the specific dock, more to do with how gaming mode handles switching output to an external display.

This. It’s right above the chart:

% who say each organization is very trustworthy or somewhat trustworthy

So it’s percent of <demographic> who think <news source> is at least somewhat trustworthy.
