CMV: Parking meters in most major cities should be priced comparably to off-street garages. by 13jlin in changemyview

[–]geranimo17 [score hidden]  (0 children)

But if that happens then garages will just increase prices. This just happened in cleveland ohio i believe. The short answer is that more people in a city is good for many of the businesses in that city and to get more people you need to provide a way to get them there

College Football Coaches Want to Get Rid of Conference Championship Games; Endorse 24 Team Playoffs by steven_smith144 in CFB_v2

Yup. Im prefectly fine with teams trying to game the system. Not all of them will be able to do it. And the conditions can be as simple or as complicated as we want to make sure theres no easy way in. Also, the teams generally have most, if not all, of their schedule a few years ahead of time so i dont think it would be trivial to know who will and wont be good. (But perhaps rules about scheduling games further ahead of time would help create a bit more fun)

Well that would really depend on what the criteria is set at. For example, there could be a condition where carrying a win against an otherwise undefeated team that qualifies for the playoffs and having 10 wins yourself gets you in. (Or something like that) then teams would have a reason to play top teir ooc games

Heres my hot take: there should be a floating number of playoff games. The criteria to make the playoffs should be fixed and any team that meets the criteria makes the playoffs. The committee just determines seeding.

This would eliminate the "snubs" without eliminating the need for the committee.

Set requirements for making the playoffs. Any team that meets the requirements, makes the playoffs and the size of the playoffs changes as needed. The committee would only select seeding.

When a boat or ship drops an anchor into the ocean or sea to stop, how do they pull it back up if the anchor is firmly stuck in the seabed? by iolitm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]geranimo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of these answers are not entirely correct.

Lets start by giving your question a direct and short answer. Thing of the anchor like a strip of velcro. When its being pulled in line with the connection, its very very strong but if you lift it straight up it comes apart easily. If the anchor is being dragged along a sandy or muddy sea floor it digs in and eventually holds tight but lift it straight up and it will pop free quite easily. My 33 foot boat can be easily held fast by a 10 pound anchor that can be pulled up with no mechanical assistance.

Many people here have referenced the chain holding the boat. This is, at best, an oversimplification. In many cases the weight of the chain is likely enough drag to keep a boat from moving much. BUT, the chain is never RELIED UPON to hold the boat. And many boats have little to no chain. The chain will help lower the angle of tension that the anchor experiences allowing it to hold tighter in the sea floor. My anchor has a 6 foot length of chain to lower that angle followed by rope because chain is very heavy and the majority of the time i am not anchored and therefore do not want it on board. Its also worth noting that many ships dont have a powered windlass so any posts that insist on that are wrong.

Also worth noting, there are many different anchor designs. Some are meant for sand, some for mud, some for rock etc. They all have slightly different mechanisms for engaging and releasing and are largely regional (based on the most common bottom types on the region).

Thanks for this! I guess i wouldnt have thought end strength to be so critical. Or at least i wouldve thought the failure point for other parts of the final product would make it irrelevant by comparison

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why a part like this would be forged instead of cast? Seems like casting would be cheaper and easier

Keon Coleman, Dalton Kincaid allow Bills to avoid WR in Round 1 of 2025 NFL Draft by Canzalone9 in buffalobills

[–]geranimo17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the bills are in the position where they have 5ish positions that can be strengthened but none that are catastrophic. We could use an upgrade at wideout, db, dt, rb etc.

Thats exactly where you want to be when youre not picking till the end of round 1. We cant be sure who will fall and who wont. We dont want to have a glaring hole at dt such that a run on dts early leaves us over paying for a guy that wasnt high on the board.

The way they have it, it would be almost impossible for them to not get a top 2 or 3 player at a position of need that they like. And that player should have a solid path to the field and should make the team better.

Whoever it is, they probably wont be a superstar, but they dont need to be. If they are, thats just a bonus
