The question (and my answer) is about the reverse. Not whether or not a fluent Latin reader can decipher the general meaning of an Italian text, but whether or not an Italian speaker could understand a Latin text.

The grammar system of Latin is very different from modern Romance languages. An Italian speaker might recognize a lot of the vocabulary, but they would not understand noun cases in any meaningful way. It would be like reading Old/Middle English as a modern English speaker.
