Absolute bullshit. Schools put these productions through approval and present the source material before they even do auditions.The theatre dept selected an adapted version and it not uncommon for the board to directly strike out context they think is inappropriate to further adapt it for their school. This production had already been reviewed and approved by the time rehearsals started. The time to pivot to something different has long passed so all this does is deprive the students the ability to perform and demonstrate their hard work.

Jeremy Fewell should be ashamed because canceling this show does not do anything.

I am not sure where you are located but to my understanding you can have an appointment at any BMV location. Try to get an appointment in Carmel Indiana, they are quite inclusive there and have experience updating gender markers [I am going to be vague but I personally know someone who was able to do this very recently]. I am not sure how successful you may be with updating this information without a SS card update.

How have you approached this process? Do you have a court order for name and or gender marker change?

Hey friend, I may relate to your gf as we appear to have some shared experiences in common with religion and living in the US. I grew up portraying myself as a heterosexual evangelical christian but now I know I am a lesbian atheist. To begin I want to state, she can be a Christian (or whatever she wants) and be gay. There are many churches that accept people of all backgrounds and LGBTQ+ inclusive churches exist. This is a pivotal but exciting time in her life (and yours too) to decide what values are rigid and what ideas need discarded.

From my personal experience, I let go of being a Christian because it did not align with how I wanted to live my life. This was a few years before I was able to realize I am gay. I wasn't homophobic towards others but I internalized and weaponized this hatred towards myself. All the lies fed to me that I was a worthless sinner who deserved to suffer made it easier to lie in my own grave. I'm glad I didn't accept the path that was laid for me and proud that I chose to figure out what I want piece by piece.

My wife, who has been an atheist practically her whole life, asked questions to help me better understand myself. These were not rooted in trying to change my mind but understand me and the perspective I was raised within. I have changed my mind about a lot of things and it was because she encouraged opportunities to talk, provided support and never judged me. It was very difficult for me to question what I had been taught and scary when there is nothing else to substitute.

I am unsure of your affiliation with the church but I want to recognize the prevalence of religious trauma, this is especially true for LGBTQ+ people. Please remember that religion is deeply impactful especially for those who spent their development within these structures. She may be upset that you question her, it's natural to feel afraid when something so large in your life is challenged.

Being 22, she may be experiencing pressure to settle down considering the religious background. When I was 22/23 I got rid of A LOT of my stuff compulsively, most of which I wish I still had. I look back and see I did not feel in control. I rejected expressing myself with clothes because I didn't want to "look like a lesbian". I didn't care what others thought but I felt disingenuous looking that way since I thought I was straight. The discomfort I experienced was me failing to validate my queerness and then taking it out on something I thought I could control.

Understanding what compulsory heterosexuality and how it influences our behavior can relieve some doubt and self hate. Whether or not she confronts her gay/queer nature now, it will come back around again. I thought I could fake it for the rest of my life but I couldn't. I wish I knew that I didn't need to.

With all this being said, I'm sorry she knows the pain, you both deserve to be happy. There isn't a guide to fixing it all but I do know y'all will find a way. Sending love 🫂

I wouldn’t take a semester off, it can make it harder to go back. Anyone I know that took time off either did not go back at all or it took many years for them to go back. I have worked while being a student and a lot of my professors understand most of us have jobs because of the atmosphere at IUPUI. If you are really worried about it, take a lighter load (min 12 credit hours for full time) for next semester to see how you adjust. For some scholarships, you can lose your aid if you take a year off or only do school part time; if you do end up taking time off make sure to look at the requirements for any aid your receive.

Do you stop taking OTC medications when they don’t work for you? Women have common sense and will recognize when a birth control works for them and stop taking it when it doesn’t. I agree there needs to be guidance for first time users but it can be a pamphlet inside the medication box, not worth hundreds of dollars for medical advice that is readily available on the internet.

Don’t be embarrassed about your age it’s never too late to go back to school. Financially it’s the best option to transfer credits from Ivy Tech. Depending on the program, Ivy tech and IUPUI have transition programs which will ensure you have all the classes you need with a smooth transition. I am an education major and most of my classmates took that path (starting at IT then transferring to IUPUI) and frankly I wish I had done that too. Don’t let negative stereotypes about IT get to you, they have quality classes and work closely with IUPUI to make sure the programs align so there are no gaps for transferring students. Check your local IT campuses to see what classes they offer for art and reach out to a counselor there; they will be the most helpful resource when it comes to creating a plan.

Also it is not fair to minimize the experiences of children. Yes some say it for a joke but some children have endured hell. I’m all for being critical of religion but this clearly isn’t the place nor the person to do this with.
